Fascism

The amount of restriction that is placed on us by CNET on blogs and message boards is ridiculous, and dare I say, fascist.  Because I do not feel free to express myself without facing undue consequences, I will not be wasting any more time on this website.  So to anyone that is reading this, peace out.

The Stomps at 400 Bar - The Gig From Hell aka ROCK STAR TRAINING

So, my band headed out, 90 miles up to Minneapolis to play this gig which we THOUGHT was going to be halfway decent.  We were headlining at this place called the 400 Bar which had a pretty impressive past lineup and looked like a pretty sweet place according to their internet site.  Red Daughters were opening up, with a $5 cover charge at the door, and we got paid according to the proceeds.  Sounds like a good deal!  Well, we get there and sound check and all that good stuff, etc.  Red Daughters played at 9, kicked ass for about 40 minutes, then finished up.  Well, the only people that showed up the entire time were their friends, maybe 8 or 10 people, none of which were old enough to drink, and none of which paid the cover charge.  So, we get onstage and play our set, skipping about one-third of the songs because the place was so empty.  About 3/4 of the way through, Red Daughters + Entourage left, leaving 5 people in the bar: my gf Tina, Zach's friend Scott, the sound guy, a bartender, and a chick taking money at the door.  So, anyway, I guess nobody did their job with promotions, and it cost us about $60 to play that crap gig: gas, dinner, and we even had to buy our own drinks at the 400.

The road to success is long and hard, that's why we call it ROCK STAR TRAINING.

Peace to you all.

Album of the Week - 3.31 - Oasis - Be Here Now

After introducing Tina to Oasis with Definitely Maybe, we moved on to their second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?  She said that it was good to hear an album that had a few songs that she already knew.  Those being "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova" which were both big hits in the States during the mid-90s.  She also said that she likes where the band is heading, and seems to be improving.  Her favorite track was "Don't Look Back in Anger."

Album of the Week - 3.31.07 - Oasis - Be Here Now

Oasis' third album is a big departure from their earlier work.  Gone is the neat and tidy songwriting that made up the last two albums.  Many of the songs on Be Here Now are over six minutes, and there are NO songs under 4.  The highlight is the pinnacle of the album, "All Around the World" which is a brilliant and sprawling affair.  Overall, this album isn't as streamlined and poppy as its breakout predecessor, but it stretches and satisfies in ways that Morning Glory did not.

I finally gave her the CD a couple of days ago.  I've been busy, and lazy.  But pretty much just lazy.

Let Love In The Goo Goo Dolls
"Trendy"
Goo Goo Dolls showed a bit of promise with their breakthrough "A Boy Named Goo" ... that is, until John Rzeznik wrote "Iris". Since then, it's been a steady decline into bland, flat, cliche, thoughtless, uninspired adult contemporary rock. "Let Love In" is the blandest, flattest, most cliched and thoughtless album of the bunch. However, it won't disappoint the casual AC fan, as long as they can find it for less than $10.

Album Review

Two Way Monologue Sondre Lerche
"Turn it up!"
Two Way Monologue is definitely a singer/songwriter type of album. If only all singer/songwriter albums were this good. Lerche's voice is unique and interesting and works well with his lyrical style. Though the songs are based around a few chords, Lerche keeps it interesting with his instrumentation. In all, this is a very good album.

Album Review

Continuum John Mayer
"Turn it up!"
Continuum is John Mayer's attempt to show his chops, even if those chops don't really belong in the song he's playing. However, this fusion is actually quite interesting, and works well with his poplike song structures. The new band has also given the songs an organic sound, something that allows them to truly flourish. There's a lot of good guitar work, interesting lyrics, and great melodies. A good album.

Dear Catastrophe Waitress Belle & Sebastian
"Turn it up!"
From the very first few notes of "Step Into My Office, Baby" Dear Catastrophe Waitress succeeds. The tunes are mostly light and pleasant with great melodies, many that will ask for replaying, again and again. The band mixes it up with a variety of instruments, including pianos and organs, strings, and a few choral passages. Overall, this album satisfies.

Her Majesty The Decemberists
"Turn it to 11!"
The Decemberists succeed on Her Majesty, which gives the listener a sense of nineteenth century maritime. The songs are a great blend of folk, rock, and other influences, all of which blend nicely. The band tops it off with some great melodies, a few of which will stick in your head after a few plays. There's also some interesting instrumentation, all of which add up to a great album, even after many listens.
