Wow, 1 million users. Karma really does exist.

I am extremely anti-piracy. What this means is that I pay for what I use. I also firmly believe that everyone should. It is in large part due to piracy that we have to pay the prices we pay for our games and music and movies. Theft is theft and should I believe be punished as such. The person that makes the pirated media should be punished, but so too should the people that buy the pirated media.The bottom line is if people didn't buy it, the pirates would be out of business. I have always beieved it although truthfully, I never in my life thought I would live to see the day where those that bought pirated media were ever punished on a large scale.

Yesterday was the day that those that had it coming finally got it and got it good. According to information week as many as 1 MILLION xbox's were blocked from online play due to modded consoles equipped to play pirated games. 1 MILLION. That is 5% of the xbox live universe. That is a huge number and it fills me full of glee like nothing ever has before. I say kudos to microsoft. Personally, I would have bricked the system, but that is just me.

I work very hard for my money. Why should I have to fork out between 60 and 90 dollars Cdn for a licensed game while some thief pays another thief a hundred bucks to mod their console so they can play pirated copies of gameswith no remorse for a fraction of that. Why should I look forward to less content and more money for games for the same reason. Piracy was the one reason I could see for companies to go all DLC which is something that I am sorely against.

Piracy hurts all of us. Every one of us that pays for a legal copy is hurt by everyone that buys a pirated copy.

I am now waiting for the whinging to start like it did when people who were cheating gamerscore lost their accounts. I wait with baited breath for the refrain of "but I only paid teh $100 dollarz to mod my 360 to play teh legal backups of mah gamezzzzz." OH PLEASE.

If you have a modded xbox don't despair. There is a bright side. The shorter and shorter single player modes that you all haven't had to worry about because you just love your multiplayer, you can at least still play those. Um, once you go buy them for real. I guess. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!

Well, the problem with just blocking them from online play is that for every console they do that to, they lose an XLB subscriber, and assuming everyone has yearly subscriptions, MS just cost themselves 50 million dollars. Yes, I know they're battling piracy, and they might have saved some money with this move now that some of these gamers will actually purchase their games now, but the proper move in my opinion would have been for MS to brick those consoles, making them entirely inoperable. Then these "gamers" would have to buy a brand spanking new console too, if they wanted to keep playing 360 games.

I'd take a banned Xbox. I don't play online anyway.

Great blog Kelly. Like you, I'm proud of my gaming collection. I put my hard-earned cash towards games because I respect the art form and I want to SUPPORT the industry. I even have friends that mod their 360s and it annoys me that they brag about having certain games. In fact, it sickens me to the point that I've lost respect for them. The bottom line to anyone who reads this message and who got banned because you modded your 360...here my message loud and clear.....you got what you deserved!!!

nice blog

@JustPlainLucas - I agree with what you said about lost revenue but, there is a percentage of people who got banned that really want to play online with their friends...Microsoft is essentially pressuring them to buy a new 360. Back comes the revenue... You think it's not true? I know two guys that are in the process of buying new 360s because of this recent ban.

@JustPlainLucas - I totally agree that the system should have just been bricked I do not know why they didn't do it. I know I would have. It's a start though don't you think? \

@Aberinkulas - I don't play online much, but once in a while I do. \

@luc11044 - thanks. I have a feeling I am not going to be popular with a couple of people on my friends list, but c'est la vie. I hate piracy.

True Story! A friend of mine was b!tching at me this very morning that he was "banned" from live. My first question was, why in the hell did you mod your box! He said he did not, all he did was fix his rrd! I fixed mine and I am still playing! I got all the required info from MS and then went ahead and ordered MS's "part". I did the install, at the same time voided any warranties.(none) MS say's "you get to play on live Lord Kingboat".
I hate pirates! I hate modders too!

Well, we know one of those 1 million (*cough* Sombrero *cough*).

I chuckled when I read the story, it certainly didn't bother me since I'm 2 legit 2 quit. I never went the mod route, never felt like I had too. Besides, as you well know, I like these green plastic cases too much.
Posted 11/12/2009 5:33pm
@LordKingboat - and that is why I think they didn't turn a million consoles into doorstops. I am sure there is a small percentage that legitimately did not mod the console. I am also sure that percentage is very, very small. \

@polsci1503 - Yeah Scott, I feel really, really bad about that 1. I'm totally shocked by it actually and a little sad. Yup you and me and our little green boxes.

@ss4brolyupth - thank you

Pirating needs to stop, and I can't help but be happy when those who try to play the system get caught.
Posted 11/12/2009 5:57pm
@luc11044: Yeah, I'm not surprised. But just think of how many more people will buy 360 games when they can't play them at all... online or offline. That's why I feel they should have bricked them instead of just banning them.
Posted 11/12/2009 5:59pm
Damn it, Microsoft. I had it made.

"The shorter and shorter single player modes that you all haven't had to worry about because you just love your multiplayer, you can at least still play those. Um, once you go buy them for real. I guess."

Umm, the pirated games should still work, they just can't play them online right?

Agreed. Pirating sucks and it is indeed what is leading publishers and system makers to push for DLC only systems. I hate it as much as anyone, but until these pirates are stopped there really is no hope. I don't see how people justify stealing a $60 game. Unless it isn't offered in your area of residence there is no reason not to buy a legal copy, and even then you can probably import a version. Pirating is wrong. By the way, I wrote a response to your last blog in a blog of my own. I'd like your thoughts on it. I think I got a bunch of people rather mad with it, but the truth hurts.

Piracy has nothing to do with how much a game costs. If piracy ceased to exist tomorrow, they'd keep charging the same amount because for the simple fact that they can get away with it.
Posted 11/12/2009 8:52pm
@raghraghragh Piracy may not be the sole cause of game prices, but it is a contributing factor. Piracy offsets the game industry by billions of dollars a year. Imagine what these developers could do if they got this money back in their pockets. We'd either see better games, or possibly cheaper games.

@raghraghragh
Prices wouldn't change, but their profits would go up and then they could invest more and take more risks. The dozen games that apparently got cancelled at EA recently might still be in the works.

Kelly, having been in the video industy, I've always said the best way to combat piracy is to punish the buyer, not the seller. If you bust someone who is supplying someone will take their place. If you take away the demand by imposing a penalty on owners of pirate product, then they can't sell anything.

However, punishing buyers would be an extremely hard thing to do for a variety of reasons, so I guess they go for the easy targets.

About Me

My name is Kelly. I am 41, born august 10th 1968. I have one child (well, two if you count my husband) and two very large dogs. Bucyrus is a 150lb mastiff. That is his awesome picture over my blog. He is sweet as a summer day if he knows you, and god help you if he doesn't. The other is a 257lb st Bernard named mushi. The name is self explanatory once you meet him I love gaming, mostly because it is an escape from the realities of day to day life. I have been playing video games since I was about 4 or 5, since the days of colecovision and atari. I like that if I am having a crap day I can go shoot things till I feel better. Or I can scare myself with a good horror survival game. My favorite platform is xbox, although I own an xbox, a ps1, ps2 , gamecube, a 360, a ps3 and a wii. I still have all my old consoles as well. My favorite game is Fatal Frame. It is truly an amazing game. The Fatal frames are also my favorite series. I am a huge fan of all horror survival games. I loved doom 3, although I would characterize that as more of a shooter, still a very creepy game. I am not a fan of RPG's. I don't get the point. I don't hate on any console nor am I a rabid fan of any console. I just like whatever plays good games. I don't care what else it can do as long as it plays good games.
