E3 08: Nintendo
Part 2 of King's Non-Biased E3 Review
Nintendo's motto at E3 was to put a smile on everyone's face. Well let me say that Nintendo's E3 conference didn't make me smile. It was just bad in so many ways. Where should I begin?
The first thing they showed was a Shaun White snowboarding game. I don't think this game is going to be that great but it does make good use of the Wii Balance Board. I was annoyed though because that girl up there was trying to say that snowboarding in video games is better than doing it in real life because it's easier and safer. I've never been snowboarding but I'd much rather experience the real thing instead of some game.
The Nintendo DS is one of the most successful systems today including both portable systems and home consoles. I do own a DS but I never play it anymore because hardly any games interest me. After watching the E3 conference there still aren't very many games I care about.
Nintendo mostly announced some games that made me say "meh" but I am excited for Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. I'm not sure how this will work out, but I'd like to see it.
I guess the DS just isn't for me. Nintendo seems to target the casual gamers instead of the core gamer. It's a little disappointing for some people but there's this small group of core gamers, and then there's everyone else so I guess good for Nintendo that they can reach out to those other people.
On to the Wii, one of the first games announced was Animal Crossing: City Folk. Getting passed the weird name, this game looks really fun. It comes with a Wii Speak which is a way to talk to other people online but instead of having a personal headset, it let's everyone in the room talk. It's probably so parents can moniter what their kids are talking about. At least there's finally a way to talk to friends online and hopefully a lot more games will be using Wii Speak.
After them bragging about their sales and what not, they announced a few average games that I don't care about.
One things I have to give Nintendo props for is Wii Motion Plus. It looks like it will add an even better experience for the Wiimote's motion sensing. The game they showed off with Wii Motion Plus was Wii Sports Resort. It looks like it has a few fun minigames but nothing I was crazy about. Nevertheless it's still good to see the new Motion Plus feature.
A big game announcement was Wii Music. Just think Rock Band with a lot more instruments and you don't have to hit specific notes. The idea of this game is to get with your friends and have fun making up your own music, but I really am not too excited about it.
Nintendo basically didn't have any big announcements and it was just a below average conference.
Grade: D+
Note: Wow I'm very lucky. Right when I got done typing this my laptop ran out of battery but good thing this page was still up. ![]()
