PlayStation Doom Review

PlayStation Doom Main Theme:
Here's my detailed review for the PlayStation port of Doom. The closest you can get to the PC version:
The year was 1995 and the PlayStation had just come out and didn't have to many games at launch and Doom was one of the first games to be launched with the system and it was a success selling well over 1 million copies and to this day the PlayStation port holds up better than the other ports.
The story in Doom. Is there a story? There's not much of a story to Doom and pretty much it borrows from the PC version. You're a marine as tough as they come. You were sent to Phobos because you hurt your commanding officer for disobeying a direct order to fire on civilians. Your days on Phobos are boring and consisting of watching restricted flicks and sucking dust. All of a sudden all hell breaks lose on Phobos, everyone is killed expect you and now its up to you as the player to blast your way through 59 levels to kick those sorry demons in their behinds all the way back to hell. They'll pay for messing with you and killing your pet rabbit Daisy.
Let's talk about the graphics. For their time in 1995 they looked pretty good and by today's standards they don't look the best, but if you can get around that then you're in for a hellishly good time. The PlayStation port of Doom received an upgrades of sort and that was to the graphics and sound, but let's talk about the enhanced graphics first. It got ambient lighting when was suppose to help the game seem scary in some parts and it does a good job of making you scared sometimes when you least expect a Spectre to sneak up on you and scare you. The only problem with the lighting is the fact that it makes it so hard to see in some of the levels. You'll usually end up getting hit by an unseen enemy who you can't see and this will most likely frustrate you to no end, but you can remedy that by turning up your TV's brightness.
On to sound. This is where the PlayStation version of Doom got the biggest upgrade and that was to the sound. Instead of using the original sound effects and music that was created by Bobby Prince, Midway called in Aubrey Hodges to compose new music and sound effects for the game and its probably some of the best sound effects for Doom. Everything sounds so much better in the PS port from the sounds of the shotgun going off to the groans of the demons and their death screams as well. Its limited by today's standards yes, but it was scary enough to make Doom seem even more scarier and it worked. A lot of people complain about the newer sound effects included and it would have been nice to see an option to include the original effects and music, but I can live with it.
Last, but now least game play. Doom is pretty simple when it comes to game play and pretty much boils down to going from on area to the next blasting demons that dare get in your way and collecting keys that open up doors as well. Some people might find it annoying to have to keep doing this, but for people that can put up with it, its some of the best gaming you'll ever have and with 59 levels its sure to keep you busy for a weekend.
The only complain I have about the game besides the lighting and some of the music is the graphics. Now as you can tell this version is based on the Jaguar code and almost every version used it. It doesn't take away from the game, but the PC version was much more colorful and had better textures. The Jaguar version used a lot of the Doom 2 textures and it made the game seem bland. If the SNES version of Doom was able to use the PC textures than other versions could have as well. Other than that the PS port of Doom is great.
The controls in the game work very well and can be customized to the way you play so it earns some points for that. My suggestion for the control scheme in Doom is go with X for attack, O for use, Square for strafe on and Triangle for speed as this feels the most natural for the game. The game uses a password system which can get annoying as you'll most likely lose the passwords, but since Doom was released in 1995 I can forgive it for that. All in all the PlayStation port of Doom is the best around and if you're a fan of Doom then there's no questioning you should get this port which combines Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 together.
Overall Doom on the PlayStation scores an 8.5 for being able to be the closet port of Doom on a console within sacrificing too much of the original game.
My Top Five Favorite Emotional Video Game Songs
We all know that Hollywood movies have great music and sad music as well, but video games are also well known for their music as well and now I present to you my personal five favorite sad songs from gaming and they aren't in any particular order.
Medal Of Honor European Assault - One Man Can Make A Difference
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iSZBBApUhY
A very emotion song to say the least, you can tell Christopher Lennertz had a lot of aspiration from John Williams as this song would be great in any WWII movie, but instead its in MOH and I was very moved by this song myself since after beating the game I wasn't expecting this song and my parents even though I was watching a WWII movie when this song played. That's how great this song is.
Halo 2 - Unforgotten
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXLNB2K-YA0
Martin O' Donnell and Michael Salvatori did an amazing job on the soundtrack for Halo 2 even thought the game was a little disappointing. When I first heard this song I thought of all the hard times I've been through, but hearing the song I'm sure it make you feel a lot of emotions as well. The remix of it off the Halo 3 OST is amazing as well. Surprisingly it brought me to tears after hearing it for the first time.
Megaman X5 - Zero's Dead
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFjQ8I7PUKI
Surprisingly a Megaman X song made it into my list, but this one's included because the significance of the song. It plays during the ending to Megaman X5 and its suppose to be a fair well to Zero. I liked this song because I felt sad at seeing Zero X's longtime friend and partner finally dying or until at last X6, but the song is emotional is its own right.
Chrono Trigger - At The Bottom Of Night
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTwocdhLpus
Not just one of my favorite RPGs of all time, but Chrono Trigger also happened to have one of my favorite soundtracks in gaming as well and this is one of the more emotion tracks in the game as well. Yasunori Mitsuda and Nobuo Uematsu composed some great music for Chrono Trigger and just from listening to the song you can almost feel the loss in this song. Truly a great piece of gaming music.
Metal Gear Solid - Enclosure
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxkGP1efHOc
You hear this song right after your battle with Sniper Wolf and its a very sad song indeed. Sniper Wolf talks about her life as this song plays and you can feel the emotion coming out in this song. MGS had a lot of great tracks, but by far this is my favorite track off the OST. Whoever was playing the piano on this song is amazing.
So there you have it. My top five favorite emotional songs from gaming. I hope that maybe listening to some of the songs gave you a tear or two. ![]()

Once again I've been tagged! -_-
Just when I thought I'd gotten away from the tagging game I get tagged again! This time by kairikh. So now I have to list ten more facts about myself.
1. My favorite place to eat out is Del Taco. Nothing beats their chicken soft tacos! They're awesome!
2. Believe it or not even though I'm over 21 I'm not a big drinker of boozes. I only drink when I feel like it.
3. I'm not much of a morning person. I'm more of a night owl.
4. The game that has had the biggest influence on my gaming life would be Super Mario World.
5. Manga doesn't appeal to me that much, but still I read Naruto and Full Metal Panic as they are the only mangas that have interested me.
6. I've collected almost every issue of the Sonic The Hedgehog comics since 1993 when the comics first came out.
7. My friend tried to get me into World Of Warcraft, but I just didn't see what was so big about the game.
8. My favorite anime is Dragonball Z. Second would be Naruto Shippuden.
9. My favorite cartoon is Sonic The Hedgehog or as its better known SatAM. A close second would be TMNT 80s.
10. My most cherished gaming console that I own would be my SNES which I've owned since I was six years old.
So yet another ten facts about me and of course I'm not tagging anyone since the game is very annoying! See you next blog!
Oh my gosh! Metal Gearrrrrr!

More Weekly Purchases

In light of my 360 going out I've been finding ways to still occupy myself and here we are with some more weekly purchases I got.
Where to start... As many of you know I'm a pretty big Doom fan and I hate to admit it, but I almost own every version of Doom made and I was missing one version that was hard to find and after months of searching I was finally able to find this version:

That's right. What people consider the worst port of Doom on 3DO. I don't own a 3DO this finally completes my collection of all the versions of Doom and I'm glad because the person selling this version was selling it for only 20 dollars pretty good if you ask me. E-Bay is great for that.

Originally I had passed up Naruto Shippuden Vol. 2 in favor of Sonic SATAM, but since it was on sale I didn't pass it up this time and I bought it. I got it on sale for $14.99 pretty good if I say so myself.

I was going to pass up Naruto Shippuden the movie, but I've heard a lot of good things about it and I decided to pick it up and I wasn't disappointed. The movie was pretty engrossing and I was surprised by the end. Recommended to anyone that enjoys Naruto. Pick this up for $10 at my local video store.

*Sonic CD box art much?* I can't go without mentioning one of my favorite comics. I had to pick up Sonic The Hedgehog Archives #11 since it contained some comics I wasn't able to get and its a must for any fan of the Sonic comics. Picked this up for 15 bucks at my local comic shop.

What's this? Some music actually found its way onto my purchases? Yes indeed it did and its from a band that I've been listening to for sometime. Chevelle is a pretty good band and their single Jars is my favorite song from the album so far, but overall its a great album. Only 10 bucks from Best Buy.
So there you go some more weekly purchases from me. I'll see everyone next blog!

Decisions, Decisions

So finally I had a chance to once again call Microsoft and their wonderful customer service. I tell you it takes forever to get through to them. I spend nearly a good 45 minutes on the phone just listening to their cheap music until I finally got to speak to an representative. You'd think that when you had your 360 repaired once before it would be easy, but no Microsoft wants you to do it all online, but the problem is its just as annoying as waiting on the phone. So anyway I tell them my 360 once again isn't working and this time its to do with the RROD. They tell me to please hold on once again while they get my information.
Thankfully it wasn't as bad as last time when I was on the phone, but still the way Microsoft manages their customer support its no wonder people don't like them. So I'm getting it repaired, but that's where I come to this decision on my own. I've had it with Microsoft and their crappy products so once I get my Xbox 360 repaired I'm selling it and using the money I get for it to buy a PS3 and since my friend is willing to buy my 360 version of Modern Warfare 2 off of me. I'll have enough money to buy one. At least I can trust Sony to not make a crappy products as my PS1 and PS2 still work pretty well. So count me out as being a 360 owner and being a future PS3 owner.
One last thing, I've been thinking of starting up a union myself and it would pretty be based on one of my favorite series Sonic SATAM. I was wondering would anyone else be interested in joining as well if I made the union?
That's all for now folks! See you next blog!
