This is actually my first experience with Built to Spill. At first listen, thought is was really good. Upon further review I find it to be an excellent album.
First time through I kinda though every song sounded like the last, but after really listening could see where they were going. Hard to explain. The dueling guitars are fun to listen to and lead singers voice is unique. Looking forward to buying they're older stuff very soon.

The opening song Dramamine is not only the best introduction to a Modest Mouse album, but arguably their best song period. More of a raw/loud sound to a lot of the songs. At first you pass them by without much tought, but after a few more listens and understanding the lyrics they really come into their own. It shows the maturity of Modest Mouse into an indie rock band and how they are now able to hang with the 'popular' rock bands out there.

Instantly fell in Love with this album. Their previous release 'the lonesome crowded west,' was one of my favorite albums ever. So, I wasn't expecting them to top it when I threw this CD in. No one song stands out as the best. Must be listened to from start to finish. Each song, though different, ties into the next. Has a great flow. It's wierd, it's wild and it's some of the best guitars I've heard in a long time. Wonderfully produced. If you're going to buy this, buy the old version. They came out with an extended version that has some live songs at the end, which ruins the flow of this masterpiece.

Overall a decent album. Has some classic Mouse in it, but some of it just doesn't deliver. This hasn't stopped me from burning a hole in the CD, but they have three or four other albums that are better overall. Bukowski is a classic. Float On is overplayed by everyone watching the OC. Not as hard as their old stuff. I expect more out of their next release.

This is the album that introduced me to 'the mouse.' One of those ablums where you're favorite song changes all the time. Songs I used to skip over are now the ones I play first. Great lyrics, awesome guitars. Has a touch of everything in it. Anyone looking to get into Modest Mouse should start with this album.
