How about a Spin-Off?
I am still in denial about Crossing Jordan finally being pulled off the air. It makes me angry that the cancellation would come at the end of a season that, in my opinion, is one of the best of the entire series. Season five was at times, painful to watch and season four wasn't much to brag about either. I admit there were definite high points in both seasons but this season, season six, blows the others out of the water. The mid-season start and the change of timeslot were most certainly the last nails in the coffin for a show that was showing some real potential to turn itself around.
So, in the wake of this cancellation, I propose a spin-off. I am a huge fan of Susan Gibney and her Crossing Jordan character, District Attorney Renee Walcott. My spin-off idea centres around her character and I really think it could work. Her character has had few storylines on Crossing Jordan, but we've been given just enough back story to make us want to spend more time with her. This character hasn't been involved in a deep way with many of the shows other characters, allowing for a smooth transition to another show without too many strings to tie up without the help of the other members of the Crossing Jordan cast. In addition, Renee Walcott is a strong and independent woman, someone we need on television. As we get rid of one show featuring a woman in the leading role, it only makes sense to replace it with another show featuring a similarly brilliant, but beautiful leading lady.
The Black Donnellys: Over
This has never happened to me before. I've never gotten into a show only to have it be cancelled a few episodes in. Maybe I'm just lucky to not have chosen shows that have gotten the axe, or more likely, I don't watch crap (usually). But The Black Donnellys is not crap. The Black Donnellys is absolutely brilliant. While the characters weren't well known or extremely attaractive (well Tommy was pretty hot) the writing and acting made up for anything the show was lacking in star power. There was a perfect mix of crime and violence and sex and humor and all the stuff everyone loves. Some have argued that the pace of the show is just too slow, but I was enjoying the build up to what I'm sure would have been a stellar season finale.
To add insult to injury, I've learned that the episodes that will not be aired are available to watch on the NBC website. However, they are not available to me here in Canada. This frustrates me to no end.
Finally, to top it all off, NBC has chosen to replace The Black Donnellys with The Real Wedding Crashers, a mornoic new 'reality' show which basically has brides and grooms 'punking' their guests. It upsets me that people would rather watch some mindless joke show like this than something smart and clever with the potenital to last a long time and do well, if only given the chance.
