End of Modern Warfare 2 PC?

Today it was announced that Modern Warfare 2 PC would have no dedicated servers, no server lists, no mods

I'm pretty disappointed by this news from Infinity Ward. I was pretty confident we'd see much the same as COD 4 - dedicated servers and all that goodness. I mean the COD 4 PC community is very impressive and it's one of the most played FPS games on the PC. 14,000 people playing right now, more than BF2 and TF2.

Rob Bowling said in the podcast "Making it much more accessible to the PC community as a whole" Which is interesting when you have such a huge player base already? Surely that says that maybe we don't need more accessible at all. The only good news out of the podcast was the fact that it uses STEAM and VAC - which is imo superior to punkbuster. The rest is purely a slap in the face and I'll strongly consider cancelling my preorder. I'm not really that interested in single player for call of duty games. What are your thoughts?

GAME REVIEWS

I completed a review for Red Faction Guerrilla overall I enjoyed it. There are many things built around the gamplay design that are done simply to make it fun, not realistic. Like for example your vehicle gets destroyed in the middle of nowhere, you start running along a road. A red faction vehicle will spawn in and drive right up to you and the driver gets out and walks away. Or when you do a side mission the vehicle turns around so you can just drive foward instead of doing a 3 point turn.

The other game I picked up within days of Batman AA and Red Faction Guerrilla was Resident Evil 5. I'm very glad to say that Capcom did a great job with the PC port. The game looks amazing, runs like greased lightning on my machine, great cutscenes and decent multiplayer. But sadly I'm not a fan of the gameplay at all, the game mechanics are very slow and cumbersome. You can't move while you aiming or reloading and you can't turn your character while reloading. That along with some really really bad AI (Sheva) makes me strongly recommend against single player. However if you are into Co-op then it's decent (some inventory issues) and mercenaries mode is sometimes enjoyable.

NOW PLAYING

Lastly but certainly not least I picked up Uncharted 2 on Friday and have played up to chapter 12 so far.

My initial impressions are very favourable. I am enjoying this game a lot more than the first. I think they are doing more with the story, the dialog is better and makes me chuckle frequently. The pacing is pretty good, no rogue checkpoint saving problems yet. The enviironments are really detailed and the ambient sounds really puts the icing on the package. It's definitely a good contender for GOTY for me although. I'm not strongly versed in the PS3 catalogue but I've played a fair share of demos enough to know this game up with the best..

UPCOMING GAMES

Well since my MW 2 preorder is under question right now I only really have Torchlight as a certainty which I already purchased on Steam. The game is selling for $18 on Steam currently in the pre-order phase. It looks like fun anyway and with the somewhat lacklustre Q4 release list for PC (and even consoles) I'm in need of something that will last me a little bit, dragon age is there also but release day DLC just annoys me to no end.

Considering how many times the PC has been slapped in the face lately, I'm surprised it hasn't started slapping back.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying Uncharted2; I have the game but haven't started it yet. As far as the PC server being shut down, and this is just my opinion and not based on any facts, I think you're seeing the wave of the future.

Given that I've only jumped a few times into the multiplayer portion of COD games (I love them for the single player), I can't say that this news concerns me the least, but I agree that it makes no sense to remove that in order to make it "more accessible to the community as a whole".

As for cancelling your pre-order, that's up to you, but I'd recommend against it. Like WalkingP said, the age of the PC getting all the online goods is coming to an end.

@Aberinkulas: well I suspect the feedback from this news will come back and bite them sometime.

@WalkingP: I can see what you mean, I'm not going to enjoy it though.

@SYdoogXxX: It doesn't make sense to me. If they were to go the EA route then you set up a system where providers pay a small fee for each dedicated server and you get income from it, (servers charge gamers etc) but this way the take out some good abilities of the PC platform for what seems like no monetary gain at all.

yea i'm pretty pissed off about the whole MW 2 thing, i mean look at Far Cry 2, the multiplayer is pretty solid, but it has no player base because of the whole matchmaking thing. I think IW really lost touch with what the COD series is really about, and went for a money making COD4 clone. I too enjoyed Red Faction: Guerrilla, i'll be reviewing it myself pretty soon, defenitely a good sandbox game. I love how Volition tries to make there games fun instead of frustrating. I liked RE 5 at first, but after a bit i just couldn't handle how clunky and unintuitive the inventory system and controls are.

Uncharted 2 is next weekend for me... must get!

As for rest of 2009, perhaps Borderlands? Wasnt that on your list at some point? Also Dirt2 is still supposed to be coming 2009... not sure tho

@with_teeth26: yeah re5 is just way too clunky, which is a shame because if they got their action running smooth it would be a pretty good game. I also get the feeling that maybe because of the clunky controls it becomes a little unique.

@The_PC_Gamer: Borderlands is still on my list and I may indeed pick it up, it doesn't take itself very seriously though which kinda kills the mood for me. DiRT 2 demo on PS3 didn't do much for me, the commentary was terrible and the over bloom effects might be too much for my monitor to handle.

oh thats sad... there was some news abt MW 2 @kotaku. im also playing uc 2 anyways im getting mw 2 for pc. I loved re 5 ya few drawbacks here n there...anyways i had fun

It does sound strange with the MW thingy but like others say, the PC is being abused by companies these days for all kind of weird things in order for us to move to consoles. Unlike you I play CoD for the singleplayer and IW has been slacking off with each progressive game. CoD4 was the shortest game I have ever played with it's 3H and 50M campaign and at 49€ on Steam that's 13€ an hour for your entertainment - it would be cheaper to go to the movies instead.

The system of charging people money for running a server is ludicrous because most people can not afford it - often they are charged large sums for essentially keeping a game up and running for the benefit of the community. EA is by far the saddest example of this with their Sims 3 game and all the additional content you must pay for. Greed has become the dominant mantra of the gaming industry and innovation is a poo poo word now. It's sad but true.

If you are into RPGs you might want to give Risen a shot since many say it's pretty good.

I say let your wallet do the talking, after all that is something we have under our control. Online petitions, angry letters, all that are irrelevant. Its your money that matters, and give it those who you think deserve it.

I think I'll be getting the 360 version of Modern Warfare 2, myself. No dedicated servers or mod support in comparison to the same matchmaking, only with friends... The only advantages I see for the PC version now are the visuals and the controls (and the price, depending on where you're shopping from).

Still, I'm glad you're enjoying Uncharted 2, and I look forward to playing it myself.

Hmm, I'm not sure what to think about those features being removed from MW2. At first I was pissed like most of the PC gamers that read it, but I dunno, after giving it some thought I think I've kinda realized what IW is trying to do with this decision, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see if it benefits or hurts the game. I must say though, the news that MW2 will be using Steam/VAC really makes me happy and I'm pretty sure I'm still going to get the game the day it comes out.

The EPF in Red Faction have a good habit of continuously spawning and most of the time overwhelm me if I stay at one spot too long.

Don't count out Dragon Age just because of DLC. The game promises to be huge at over 100 hours of game play + mods.

@jepsen1977: I've never been a big fan of COD single player games. I thought COD 4 sp was contrived, however the multiplayer was great because it took out all that contrived scripting and focused on the weapons, good design, speed, audio. So in my mind I see this as eliminating that good mp experience which eliminates my reason to get it.

@chandu83: its really the best solution. However I wish more game sites took up arms for gamers, instead they are concerned about securing precious exclusive reviews prior to launch.

@Doom_HellKnight: I could get it on ps3 but see no reason since the reason I'm not happy is because it's going to be the same setup there. So if I'm going to get it, it will be on PC for the better visuals and the mouse controls.

@Forerunner-117: Can you tell me why? Because I have no idea People always object change, just thinking back on the Steam saga how many people complained and look at it now. However changing a successful formula is risky.

@Jd1680a: The EDF will keep spawning in, until you finish the mission or your alert level goes down. I think they don't want you to get bored, but also want to save bigger destruction later (with mechs and better weapons

@pvtdonut54: truthfully it never appealed to me, the release day dlc is just a good excuse, i'm not sure why it doesn't appeal to me, I do like the odd RPG (see witcher and mass effect)

Well this is just my guess as to what their intentions are, but if I understand correctly, it's all about convenience. They're just trying to streamline the online multiplayer experience. Instead of having to sort through the list of servers and find the one with the best ping and which suits your preferences most, it will simply find the "best" server for you so that when you want to play you just click on multiplayer and bam! There you go. So they're exchanging more choices for ease of use I suppose. I could be mistaken on the concept of dedicated servers too though, so please correct me if there are any problems with my information on the subject.
Posted 10/18/2009 9:24pm
Well yes this is probably wat they intend. A "go" button to just join the best available and if there are enough players match the skill level perhaps.

Although there is no reason why they can't do this using dedicated servers, BF2 does it (badly) where it searches, finds best ping, not full server and joins you after one click. I honestly think there is room to do both a server list and a smart "GO" button. This way it caters to both groups of users and doesn't sacrifice anything.

I hate the idea of release day DLC a lot but I wouldn't miss out on a game just because of that.
Posted 10/19/2009 1:24am
I can imagine soon there will be no ping only "User friendly" connection bars like on consoles
Posted 10/19/2009 6:33am
Oh I agree, it seems a bit silly of them to limit options like this.
