Originality and brand recognition. I don't know if they make you guys as angry as they make me, but I think they are a problem the game industry needs to fix. What I want to know, is why gaming companies keep doing these things. They piss me off, and I'm sure they do the same to you all as well. Now, brand recognition is not as common(at least the way I figure) as the problem of originality, but it is just as important.
Brand recognition, to me, is when Dev's say they are making a sequel when they are really making anew ip. Even with good games, they do this just so people will go, "oh, hey, I know that name! I liked the original, so this one must be just as good!" Two examples would be far-cry 2 and prince of Persia 4. Those are not sequels people! Is jack carver in FC2? no! god, the prince isn't even a prince in the new prince of persia! his regal title doesn't even match the one on the box!
My god, this gets me so worked up!. Now, I'm sorry about whining and everything, and I don't mean to troll or rant(well, yes, I do mean to rant). It's not really a big deal, but thats like saying border lands is diablo 4! Wait, thats even more simaller to the other ones are to their originals... Oh, and I'm not saying that Prodigy(thats what I call "POP4") and big Africa shoot em' up(farcry 2) are going to be bad, they are two of my most anticipated games of the year, but in a market flooded with sequels, wouldn't you rather have 2 new games as opposed to two"follow ups"?
And second on my hate list is originality, something you can all relate to a little more. I'm not talking about space marines or apocalyptic worlds(god knows those topics have been beaten to death). I'm talking about the premise of game, and this is something most people will get mad at me for. I am sick and fu**ing tired of revenge and save the world plot-lines. Of the 16 games in my collection, 9 are about revenge, and 4 are about saving the world!
and thats just my 360 case. Dont even get me started on PS2 or anything. The 3 games I have that's aren't about revenge are pop: tsot(still technically about redemption, which is a type of revenge), Knights of the old republic(its about saving the galaxy), and battlefield 2: MC(i have no clue what that story is about, and I've given up trying). I dont even understand it, its not that hard to come up with ideas! Even mario's save the princess is more original for its time and by contrast to today's stuff.
To reference Borderlands again, its about finding treasure. Oblivion, while being about saving the world, the main story is so downplayed it really doent count. I... really cant think of anything else off the top of my head... And thats sad... really sad...
Here are two ideas, right now, that I thought of on the the spot. A side scroller where the main character cant see farther than 10 feet in front of him because the villain stole his glasses which are made of gold, and the whole game is a chase to the right because your main character bob has a felling the guy went that way. A demon hunter gets bored of his job so he summons A demon. The demon thinks the Man is going to enslave him so he calls up a million of his minions that you have to fight through just to tell the guy you wanted a shake.
And I just thought of these, right now, and even though they suck, I'm not a game dev, am I?
