EBT - The Best Of Conversation Suicide so far.... Conversation Suicide"Underappreciated"
What Can I say about CONVERSATION SUICIDE? They've been trying to break out of the TUCSON Music Scene, and get noticed both throughout the USA & abroad for over 4 years now. Phlegm, their self-designated manager/webadministrator/frontman/promoter/and annoying man about town, is probably one of Tucson's MOST Eclectic Musicians, with love for ALL things music. SO naturally, he tends to attract musicians that are fairly open to diversity in style/structure, but also, unfortunately, fairly flakey at the same time. Whether they ever can fully get their collective off the ground and beyond the very ELITIST Tucson Music Scene borders, only time will tell. But just LISTEN to a few of their over 40 studio recorded tunes so far, and you'll clearly see WHY they claim to be so eclective. With Phlegm doing the LEAD vocals on all their studio material up to this point, it's clear that the diversity in their "style" of music is in part due to his ability to experiment with multiple methods of vocal variation. It could be said that the demographic of a Conversation Suicide fan, would be one who enjoys both the varietacious flavors of Phlegm's vocal melodies/lyrix and Punk/funk/metal/industrial/goth/blues/hip-hop musical compositions. I.E., usually, a person who is NOT locked-in to one particular genre of music. This could bode well for Phlegm, and the rest of the crew, since most folks out there in the world tend to like and listen to MORE than just one type of Musik. It should be noted that for their forthcoming 2008 CD Release, "EBT - The Best of Conversation Suicide So Far...", they've added even more diversity and fire power with lead vocals for the bran-new "Tattoo my Fist" and "Shell-Shock" songs done NOT by Phlegm, but the Guitarist D-Lo. With Phlegm creating & doing the chorus hooks and backup vocals on these two songs, it only makes D-lo's delivery that much more powerful and catchy. In recent interviews on Tucson's "BIG WORD ON THE TUCSON MUSIC SCENE" TELEVISION PROGRAM, both D-lo & Phlegm made it clear they intend to do more of the lead & backup vocals switching off to bring out the best of what either can do on any given song. This will be the most noted change on FUTURE recordings and collaborations they hope to do this coming year, but ONLY if "D-Lo sticks around", according to Phlegm. He was also heard to say, "I stopped worrying about who's in the band. If you show up for band practice and/or gigs, than you're in the band!". To be fair, the MANY lineup changes over just the past 4 years alone for this band is both the obvious curse and accidental blessing of Phlegm's music "Eclectic collective". With a revolving door for musicians, coming and going constantly in and out of the band, one can NEVER be sure who, besides Phlegm, will be playing at any given show in Tucson. This is always a pleasant and creative suprise to some, and consternation to others, who desire absolute consistency. Whatever can be said of such an interesting method of dealing with the whole band member loss & breakup issue, it has resulted in Phlegm's collaboration with some of Tucson's finest musicians over the past 8 years. Is it just an excuse to cover up for lack of chemistry OR an antisocial, ADHD-diagnosed artist's inability to "hang onto" good musicians? Or will it prove to be an ingenius way to deal with the natural free spirit that exists in ALL artists? This writer definitely thinks it's the latter, but what will matter in the end is this: after listening to even just 5 of the tunes listed on MP3.com and any of the over 20 other Web music distribution sites Phlegm's band is on (just check out the LINKS page at CONVERSATIONSUICIDE.COM), who can deny the volume of diverse material, that is crying out to be noticed? Maybe there will NEVER be a definitive lineup for CONVERSATION SUICIDE, thus making the name itself take on new meaning. One thing's for certain, this hodge-podge of styles and influences, resulting in loads of great original music, is partly due to Phlegm's bizarre ability to collaborate and bring together musicians from ALL walks of life for short, concentrated, and creative bursts of time. Irregardless of who will eventually help push the band beyond Tucson's city limits, clearly CONVERSATION SUICIDE wouldn't be the same without its self-proclaimed leader, Phlegm. Check out CONVERSATION SUICIDE on MP3.com and these other significant sites: MYSPACE, PUREVOLUME, IACMUSIC, IdolUnderground, isounds, 500AmericanBands, IMEEM, and many more...
