Today is ANZAC Day

What is ANZAC Day?

ANZAC Day - 25 April - is probably Australia's most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers in those forces quickly became known as ANZACs, and the pride they soon took in that name endures to this day.

Why is this day special to Australians?

When war broke out in 1914 Australia had been a federal commonwealth for only 14 years. The new national government was eager to establish its reputation among the nations of the world. In 1915 Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula to open the way to the Black Sea for the allied navies. The plan was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul), the capital of the Ottoman Empire and an ally of Germany. They landed at Gallipoli on 25 April, meeting fierce resistance from the Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold stroke to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915 the allied forces were evacuated after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers were killed. News of the landing at Gallipoli made a profound impact on Australians at home and 25 April quickly became the day on which Australians remembered the sacrifice of those who had died in war.

Although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives of capturing Constantinople and knocking Turkey out of the war, the Australian and New Zealand actions during the campaign bequeathed an intangible but powerful legacy. The creation of what became known as the "ANZAC legend" became an important part of the national identity of both nations. This shaped the ways they viewed both their past and future.

Double Platinum Kiss
"Timeless"
The Double Platinum album is a fantastic collection of KISS' greatest hits. The majority of songs were remixed, and some were changed significantly, but its still a great album.

The band recorded a fresher version of Strutter, which is succinct compared to the original. It's been "grooved-up" with a hi-hat and a swishy sound. The intro to Rock Bottom tagged on at the beginning of She is a nice touch; Hard Luck Woman has an extensive acoustic intro which was great. Black Diamond loses the droned ending of the original by repeating the opening verse at the end, I prefer this version to the original.

Double Platinum is K I S S' greatest hits! It is a very comprehensive package of the big songs though, of course, there are a few omissions that I would have liked to see included. This album is indisputably grade A material but a couple of the rawer tracks like Goin' Blind or Parasite could have been added to rough things up a little. But overall a fantastic album.

"Turn it up!"
This was and still is a great debut album for this fanastic group ... it's in your face lyrics .... back in the day they were dubbed the edge and the hard guys in pop.

5ive debuted with this brilliant album way back in 1998. 5ive were, and always will be the best boy band ever and they leave behind 4 great albums. My favourite tracks on this album are: When the lights go out and slam dunk da funk. This is a great album

American Idiot Green Day
"Masterpiece"
American Idiot begins of with a very powerful title track getting things started with a high dose of adrenilin. It then weaves in and out of a rich mixture of tempos and dynamics while never losing the knowledge that this is in fact a work of Green Day. Through ballads, through chants, through du wop back ups lifted from the best of motown, right on through good old rock'n roll riffs galore, this album moves and ebbs effortlessly.

This is an exciting and meloncholly album, it's thrilling and sad all in one perfect package. I'm sure the narrow minds will scoff and complain about the punklessness of this album. Hopefully people will listen to American Idiot more than once before condemming this unique and spirited piece of work.

Christina Aguilera Rock/Pop
"Legend"
Stripped was Aguilera’s long awaited follow-up to her 1999 self-titled debut album. Many female pop stars have come and gone since her first album, but Christina persevered. She had noticed female pop was going in two distinct directions. Either they are good girls, like Mandy Moore or Jessica Simpson, or they are bad girls, like Pink or Willa Ford. Christina decided debut her bad girl image, laugh with the sinners rather than cry with the saints, because the sinners are much more fun.
Her direction on this album is one of a sexually liberated woman who is not afraid to admit it. I agree with her stance on sexual politics.
The thing I liked about Stripped was that Christina experimented with musical styles like on “Fighter,” where she does a little hard rock or the ballad “I’m OK,” she talks about her abusive father while a haunting acoustic guitar plays in the background
Musically I think Christina is growing and expanding. She has always had the best voice of any pop female today Stripped is a great album; it is innovative album for Christina.
