Got Myself Two Great and Not-So-Great PC Games

I did some online shopping last week and bought myself two PC games: System Shock 2 and Men In Black: The Game.

System Shock 2

System Shock 2 is widely known as one of the best PC game ever made and it won numerous awards when it first came out in 1999. It was also known for being one of the scariest games out there. I've never played the game before but after hearing about it and discovered that the designer responsible for System Shock 2 (Which in this case- Ken Levine) also made the fabulous Bioshock of last year, I knew I had to give it a try. Problem is, this game is a real hassle to find. I was hoping to find a re-released version like any other games but this one was just a pain in the neck to hunt, so I decided to purchase one in eBay.

When it landed on my mailbox, I was thrilled. I couldn't wait to give it a try but after installing it to my laptop, the frickin' game won't work. Dammit! It's one of those stupid Windows compatibility crap again. I can install the game without any problems but as soon as I dive right into it, the game keeps freezing. I was able to walk around a bit but the screen freezes without any warnings and the sound stutters a lot. Y'know, this is what I hate the most about playing old PC games. The compatibility piece of crap. It's all about downloading patches, installing the right drives, not XP compatible. All that bullsh!t. It's so annoying. I have other games I've been wanting to play such as Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines, Max Payne, Painkiller but I face the same problem with them as well. Why can't Microsoft make our lives easier by producing some kinda program or add-on that allows user to play old pc and MSDOS games? How complicated can that be? I guess that's why Vista is a huge flop because they don't do it for the consumers needs. It's all about the cash. OK, maybe I'm going a bit off topic here but my point is, all this patch and incompatible bullcrap should be banned. This is something I have no tolerance for. Installing software should be a simple and straightforward procedure. It doesn't have to be a %*&#&!*% project!!!

MIB

Surprisingly, this other PC game of mine works really well. I'm reffering to Men In Black: The Game. This may not be the best movie-based video game out there (Almost all movie-based VG sucks) but honestly I really enjoy this game. I remember playing it the first time when a friend of mine lend it to me many years ago and at the time, I hadn't watch the MIB movie yet so I really didn't have a clue of what to expect in this so called "official game of the movie". But to this day, I still like this game very much, and you guys might think, "what the hell? How could like this garbage?"

I know the controls are kinda stiff, the storyline is way far off from the movie, the fighting sequence is terrible, the levels are incredibly short and rather than having to fight like a big-giant-non-humanoid-alien-like-creature-from-outer-parts-of-the-galaxy as the final boss, what you get instead is a crazed billionnaire who is armed with a robotic body. Worst final boss ever. So why do I like this game? I dunno. I just love it. It just has that certain charm to it that some people get it and some people don't.

Ok, back to the point. So as I was saying, unlike System Shock 2, I had no problem installing and playing Men In Black today. No crashes, no freezing, no compatibaility bullcrap, nothing. Everything was smooth. It was so smooth in fact that I even finished the game in just about two and a half hours. Now that's a lousy game but I love it . If anyone has any solution in playing System Shock 2, don't hesistate to give comments about it. I tried using the patch but a message appears saying that the game is already a higher version so the patch is not required. How do I avoid the game from freezing unexpectedly?

New Emblem: Bloodbath!

Bloodbath

Didn't expect to receive a new emblem so soon but I got it anyways. What I also didn't expect to get an emblem from watching Gears of War 2 gameplay marathon last night. Watching it is cool but it's not the same when you're not playing it. Must get the game ASAP. I'm also considering getting Alone In The Dark for the PC. Should I get the game? I know the game is known for being too ambitious and received mixed results from both critics and fans alike, but my instinct tells me to ignore them and experience it yourself. That's me: I like playing mediocre and unpopular titles like Army Men, Batman: Dark Tomorrow and more. Why? Cos these games happen to have great storyline and universe which I enjoy diving it into but it's so sad that the controls are horrendously bad. What a shame. But don't worry. I don't play REALLY bad games like Big Rigs, Superman 64, Bad Boys, etc. Those games are truly abysmal. That's for sure.

Something To Break Out The Violence...Nintendogs!

After playing countless of mature rated games killing tons and tons of baddies with weapons and seeing bloods and guts splattering around, its time to take a break from the violence and start playing a new game that doesn't involve any blood: Nintendogs!

At first I wasn't really sure whether or not to buy this kiddy game but after knowing that the godfather of gaming himself Shigeru Miyamoto, created Nintendogs, I thought I'd give it a try.

Dalmation Nintendogs

I bought the Dalmation & Friends version and...aww, looky here. Loookatthecutewittledoggy. Here boy, here boy. Phewit! Aww, it wants to pway ball. I think it wants to wear a fireman's hat and...aww, come here lil puppy pie! Who's my cute wittle fireman? Who? Who? That's wight. You are my cute wittle fireman.

Well, ehem, ehem. Did I say that loud? All I have to say is that it's awesome! Who would've thought of having virtual pets is a whole lot of fun? I know Tamagochi/Digimon came out with it first but this one is way better. You can play with it, feed it, stroke it, walk with it, sleep with it, anything you want. There's no scoring involve, no high score, no game over, nothing. Sure, there's the competitions and stuff but even when you lose you don't feel discouraged like any other games I can think of. I find myself playing it whenever I have nothing to do or just having played an M rated game and want something sweet for a dessert.

I encourage anyone to try it out. Even if you're not really into dogs (Like me. I prefer cats than dogs actually but sadly there aren't any good virtual cat games.), you will find a good side of it deep down in your heart. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to give my puppy a bath.

...aww, look at the wibbon on it's ears...

Happy Halloween

Just want to wish everyone a Happy Halloween. May the kids will endulged themselves with candies while the adults will scare the living crap out of them. This really is a special day today for me because I got two new emblems from the Halloween Mania Scavenger Hunt and I just turn level 29 (Radiant Silvergun).

Boo!

New Profile Banner Uploaded!

Finally, I got my new banner uploaded so what do you guys think? It's a collection of our beloved ex-GameSpot editors (With me on the top right making a quick appearance) who came and went but contributed countless things to the website and yes, I drew this picture. I know I missed out a few other former staff in this picture like Frank Provo, Matt Rorie, Vinnie Caravella and possibly more but keep in mind this is meant for editors who made an appearance at least one or more video reviews at GameSpot.com (Except for Rich Gallup but I just put him in here anyway because he did a fantastic job with On The Spot and Button Mashing) and video review is what I love the most during the Greg Kasavin era. It may sound weird to most people, but I actually "grew up" watching these great cast in video reviews and always look forward making their next appearance in the upcoming video reviews. I just find it fun and sometimes humorous how they give their thoughts and side comments about each game. The interaction between the game and the reviewer is pretty interesting to me.

Like any other GameSpot members, I was really sad when the editors left GameSpot beginning with Greg Kasavin and gradually the rest of these cast- one by one. Some departed in a good way and some departed in a harsh way but let's not get into that. The main reason I drew this banner is to dedicate to Greg Mueller, Ryan Davis, Alex Navarro, Rich Gallup, Tim Tracy, Jeff Gerstmann, Greg Kasavin, Jason Ocampo, Bob Colayco, Carrie Gouskos and Brad Shoemaker for their endless contributions at GameSpot and inspiring us in many ways. Thank you all and best of luck in your future endeavors, and also to our current members here at GameSpot: Brian Ekberg, Ryan MacDonald, Justin Calvert, Tyler Winegarner, Dave Toister, Ricardo Torres, Aaron Thomas, Guy Cocker, Homer Rabara, Kristin Reilly, Kevin VanOrd, Jody Robinson, Don Francis, Stanley Lin, and many more. Thank you for keeping this website alive, thank you for all the updates and thank you for adding cool features to the site. Keep it up and all the best.

Peace!
