Status Update Dec. 14
Hi, Everybody. Just a quick hello. I'm swamped at work, but the boss is away at a meeting right now so I can slip in a quick update.

We're meeting with my husband's family on Friday for our Christmas celebration. His sister that moved to Florida will be here. She hasn't been here for Christmas since she moved a few years ago.

I wanted to show you this list: AOL's Best TV Shows of the 2000s. See if you agree.

Video Games are an Art Form

Video games have been around for quite some time by now, offering multitudes of ways to entertain, captivate, and challenge the player's intellect. Throughout the years, video games have evolved into something much more than simple pixelated sprites shuffling across the screen, giving way to enhanced graphics, more sophisticated stories, and a much greater amount of effort on part of the creator(s). Sadly, despite this magnificent boom in creative potential, there are still some who consider that video games are not, when compared to movies, music, and other forms of expression; art. Take, for example, this statement by Roger Ebert:

"...games could not be high art, as I understand it. How do I know this? How many games have I played? I know it by the definition of the vast majority of games. They tend to involve (1) point and shoot in many variations and plotlines, (2) treasure or scavenger hunts, as in "Myst," and (3) player control of the outcome. I don't think these attributes have much to do with art; they have more in common with sports." - Ebert (2007)

Taking into consideration that Ebert was following up on a previous, more crass statement that video games will never be art; the points he makes can be easily dissolved with a wealth of exceptions and/or creative methods to compensate for such points. The following are examples of games that will, beyond any reasonable doubt, prove that video games are much more than a simple interactive shooter-adventure sport:

Shadow of the Colossus

Anyone with at least a decent knowledge of the previous console generation can recall that Shadow of the Colossus is easily the most stunning games for the PS2, as well as the most unique. Throwing away many traditional conventions, SotC consisted solely of defeating these monstrosities. No mini-bosses, no regular enemies, just a massive world, a horse, and a lonely man aching to revive the maiden he so dearly loves. The sheer scale of the land and the creative, puzzle-like method of dispatching the massive foes creates a unique experience that will not soon be forgotten. Easily, SotC dispels all three of Ebert's claims by being a puzzle game with little point-and-shoot elements, foregoing any "scavenger hunts", and having an ending that is not determined by the player respectively.

Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjDtw6rmJ9g

Ico

Though by the same developer (SCEA), Ico is, without a doubt, a glorious and touching example of how moving a video game's story can truly be. Playing as a boy guiding a maiden through a perilous journey, the connection between the two grows stronger over the course of the experience until an event occurs that will emotionally effect even some of the heaviest-hearted people. It should also be noted that, for its time, the graphics were quite advanced and the unique art styIe truly made this title one of the best of its year.

Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsbJ8GIIySE

Katamari Series

By far one of the goofiest (and trippiest) games to come out in quite some time, the Katamari series has proved time and time again that graphics are not the only thing that matters. From its absolutely hilarious surrealism to the quirky bits of dialogue the King of the Cosmos blurts out at the player, every single entry has proved itself worthy as a highly creative series on par with surrealist filmmakers, painters, and so on.

Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpI5uI6bMm0

Okami

Okami's styIe is instantly recognizable to anyone who has followed the video game world for the past few years. Utilizing the highly-artistic Japanese watercolor theme to its fullest, Okami allowed players to take control of the elements of nature via a magical calligraphy brush that was able to turn the tides of the wind, sea, earth, and also deliver decisive blows to enemies. Its penchant for artistic prowess easily qualifies it as one of the most artistic games in recent memory.

Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTUm07enrs4

Tower of Shadow

Though it isn't released yet, Tower of Shadow is something any person can glance at and easily consider it a highly creative idea. Using a unique method of gameplay that focuses on the background rather than what would traditionally be played on, the overall styIe of this upcoming title has the potential for Ico-grade artistry.

Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viZjjpuymrc

Oddworld Series

Created by Lorne Lanning, a magnificent artist judging by the complexity and overwhelming skill taken into his concept art, the Oddworld series is living proof that video games can have not only artistic, but political significance as well. Though subtle, such topics as worker exploitation and species extinction (Abe's Oddysee), brutal takeover of the American West (Stranger's Wrath), animal testing (Munch's Oddysee), and other issues have been covered by entries of this highly creative series. Also, the gameplay in the first couple games are especially unique since it was one of the first side-scrollers to completely reject the Mario format of platforming for a more puzzle-like role as the skinny guy with no weapons.

Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2EDJbIyzpo

-

In conclusion, video games can be much more than simple entertainment. Games can be anything from an artistic expression to a political statement that has considerable significance. It will be interesting to see where technology will take us all in the future of gaming, as uncertain as things may be in the perspective of some. Regardless of the industry's direction, there is something I will always truly believe: Video games are art.

You!! Off my planet!!
Hello fellow Tv.commers, how are you all doing today? Honestly is it very cold outside here and is really starting to 'feel' like Christmas. All we need is some snow and we are set!! Not that I want the snow but ya know what I mean.

So it is that time of year when we already have enough going on, and articles like this one remind me of the pile of work on my desk. Backed up as usual on my books I really need to get motivated, but I want to get my Christmas shopping done first.

Speaking of Christmas, the tree is up...house is decorated...and shopping is about 50% complete. Several things arrived today via FedEx while others arrived at the gates of hell using the site to store option. The less time I spend in there the happier I will be.

We have had to involve the local police in a few matters around the liquor store. We had a shoplifter, with some help we got her identified. Found out that she was also wanted by Walmart for shoplifting there. We also have a rash of kids (college and local) that think it is cool to try to buy using a fake ID. Well my motto is: you fake it, I take it!! So this year we have turned several over to the police. It would be really nice if they would actually do something about them.

Ok guys I am gonna jet, I have lots to do. Enjoy!!

Later Taters!!

Yes, I have Been Away

Hey all,

As many of you have probably noticed, I've been away a while. I had some health issues that needed to be tended to and I was off tending to them. I'm okay now, feeling much better. I apologize to everyone for not getting back to them or letting anyone know ahead of time. It all happened kind of quickly. I'm back now and trying to catch up, so if you wouldn't mind taking it easy on me for a bit I would appreciate it. The rest of the staff has done a bang up job covering in my absence and I thank them sincerely. I'm looking forward to getting back into the swing of things quickly. Hope this finds everyone well. - Dan

Happy Fourth Anniversary!

Apparently today marks my fourh-year anniversary on GameSpot. It was a good year as always, complete with my new status as a ranger .

I don't have much else to say beyond that. Those of you who want pictures of cats and cakes, you know where to find them .

Actually, I didn't realize that today was the day until about two days ago, when someone asked me when I joined on the How to GameSpot board. Maybe next year I'll remember on my own.

My of the Day. Can You Guess Who Does It?

Blades of Glory

I’m a lone wolf in a cage
Lost my partner to a lie
Like a bird with broken wings, yeah
It’s impossible to fly
I tried to live for two
But only trust in one
Is there nothing that we can do?
Are we truly done?
Every day we do or die
As we’re sailin’ across the sky
Now we’re comin’ home
On these blades of glory
Settin’ fire to the ice
Is the dream that keeps us alive
Now we’re comin’ home
On these blades of glory
Could this be the end
of our mythic story?
I don’t know what to say
I don’t know where to turn
All I know is if I stay
Ooh this ice it sure can burn
A man who’s scared of truth
Can only trust in lies
A boy who’s scared to dream
Can never touch the sky, oh yeah
Every day we do or die
As we’re sailin’ across the sky
Now we’re comin’ home
On these blades of glory
Settin’ fire to the ice
Is the dream that keeps us alive
Now we’re comin’ home
On these blades of glory
Today is the first chapter
Of our mythic story
We’ll never part
On these blades of glory
And we’ll cross our hearts
On these blades of glory
What do you say
Tonight we celebrate
By going out our way, yeah
O-oo-oh, let’s go all the way, yeah
It’s our calling
Every day we do or die
As we’re sailin’ across the sky
Now we’re comin’ home
On these blades of glory
Settin’ fire to the ice
Is the dream that keeps us alive
Now we’re comin’ home
On these blades of glory
Blades of glory
We’ll go all night
‘Til we finish the story
Now we’re comin’ home
On these blades of glory
The dream is alive
And we’ll never be sorry
Now we’re comin’ home
On these blades of glory

Or

She was more like a beauty queen from a movie scene
I said don't mind, but what do you mean I am the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round
She said I am the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round

She told me her name was Billie Jean as she caused a scene
Then every head turned with eyes that dreamed of being the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round

People always told me be careful what you do
Don't go around breaking young girls' hearts
My mother always told me be careful who you love
Be careful what you do 'cause the lie becomes the truth, yeah

Billie Jean is not my lover
She is just a girl who claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
She says I am the one, but the kid is not my son

For forty days and for forty nights the law was on her side
But who can stand when she's in demand, her schemes and her plans
'cause we danced on the floor in the round
So take my strong advice
Just remember to always think twice
Do think twice

She told my baby we danced 'til three And she looked at me, and showed me a photo
My baby cried, his eyes where like mine
Can we dance on the floor in the round

People always told me be careful what you do
Don’t go around breaking young girls’ hearts
But she came and stood right by me
Just to smell her sweet perfume
This happened much too soon
She called me to her room

Billie Jean is not my lover
She is just a girl who claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
She says I am the one, but the kid is not my son
Not my son

Billie Jean is not my lover
She is just a girl who claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
She says I am the one, but the kid's not my son
Not my son

A man walks into a bar and asks the bartender, "If I show you a really good trick, will you give me a free drink?" The bartender considers it, then agrees. The man reaches into his pocket and pulls out a tiny rat. He reaches into his other pocket and pulls out a tiny piano. The rat stretches, cracks his knuckles, and proceeds to play the blues.

After the man finished his drink, he asked the bartender, "If I show you an even better trick, will you give me free drinks for the rest of the evening?" The bartender agrees, thinking that no trick could possibly be better than the first. The man reaches into his pocket and pulls out a tiny rat. He reaches into his other pocket and pulls out a tiny piano. The rat stretches, cracks his knuckles, and proceeds to play the blues. The man reaches into another pocket and pulls out a small bullfrog, who begins to sing along with the rat's music.

While the man is enjoying his beverages, a stranger confronts him and offers him $100,000.00 for the bullfrog. "Sorry," the man replies, "he's not for sale." The stranger increases the offer to $250,000.00 cash up front. "No," he insists, "he's not for sale." The stranger again increases the offer, this time to $500,000.00 cash. The man finally agrees, and turns the frog over to the stranger in exchange for the money.

"Are you insane?" the bartender demanded. "That frog could have been worth millions to you, and you let him go for a mere $500,000!" "Don't worry about it." the man answered. "The frog was really nothing special. You see, the rat's a ventriloquist."

Another TV.com Anniversary
It's my tv.com anniversary today. It's hard to believe I've been at this site for 4 years already. It really doesn't seem that long. I was just thinking that this last year has gone by so fast. It seems like it was just last year's anniversary a couple of months ago. I've met so many wonderful people here and made so many friends. I'm glad I'm a part of this site.

Hubby's having surgery on his left foot again on July 13. While the first surgery fixed some things, it didn't fix everything and it created additional problems. He's still in constant pain and can't stay on his feet for any length of time. I guess it's easy for these things to go wrong because he's found that a lot of people have had the same issues after foot surgery that he's having. I really hope this second surgery fixes everything. You just can't do anything when your foot hurts all the time. When you're feet hurt, it's the only thing you can think about.

Work is going well, but I'm so busy there. I'm not complaining because it's better than being bored with nothing to do, but it gets so crazy sometimes. I prefer it to be steady rather than manic. I'm on call this week, but haven't been paged (touch wood). I don't really feel like going out to the plant after hours right now.

I haven't been watching a lot of television lately since just about everything is on hiatus. Torchwood is going to begin airing here on July 20 and I'm looking forward to that.

BBC America also aired the Doctor Who Christmas special on June 27. They'll be airing the rest of the specials instead of SyFy as well. I'm glad. They treat the show a lot better than SyFy did. SyFy cut scenes from every episode to make room for ads. The only time BBCA does that is when they re-air episodes that last an hour or more. They never cut it on the first airing, so we always have at least one chance to see the entire episode.

I'm renting Invasion from Netflix. I didn't see it when it aired and I'm sorry I didn't. It's an excellent show. It's too bad they cancelled it. It turns out that Shaun Cassidy is pretty good at creating stories. At any rate, I have 7 episodes left and I'm looking forward to them. I'm pretty sure it ends with a massive cliff hanger, though.

I've gotten hooked on another show by renting it from Netflix as well. It's called Dexter. Unfortunately, I don't have Showtime so I can't watch this when it airs. The season 3 DVD is going to be released next month, but I won't be able to watch season 4 in September.

It's been dreadfully hot here the last month and we've had only 1 day with any rain. It was only enough rain to wet the surface of the ground as well. The ground is so dry and we can't really water because it just evaporates. The city has even asked people not to water their yards on even number days. The temperature has reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius), but it feels like 110 degrees (43 degrees) with the heat index. I'm sure it's going to get worse because August is the hottest month of the year and it's been like this for the entire month of June. The electric bill is going to be huge. There's just no way to tolerate it without air conditioning. I sure hope we don't get another hurricane. The water is so warm, the thing would become massive fairly quickly.

That's it for me. I hope everyone is having a happy and safe 4th of July.

Submission Guidelines - Just a Repost
Nothing too thrilling here. Just thought I'd repost the submission guidelines I use. They appear on the forums of all currently-airing shows I edit, but better to have them here then in the forum of every show I edit.

-----

1 ) Look at what's already on the page. If there's nothing there yet, look at another episode page. If you want to know what name to use for a regular character (Dick vs. Captain Richard), or if a name should be bolded, or whether there should be double-spacing between quote lines, or whether quotation marks should be used, or where to use italics, do what's already been done. If you're not sure how to do the XHTML, click on Edit for an existing entry and see how it's done.

2 ) Don't steal from another site. Except for Quotes, everything should be in your own words (and that includes quote contextual material). Even summaries based on press releases should be rewritten as "your content." It's a TV.com requirement, it's copyright, and it's common courtesy.

3 ) Be accurate and provide a source. Unless you're an incredibly fast typist/writer and have an incredible ear for dialogue, pause the recording. Rewind. Transcribe the dialogue, rewind again, double-check. For episodes that haven't aired yet, always provide an original verifiable source in Comments. Provide as complete a URL as possible: if I can't find it, I can't accept it.

4 ) If you edit, use Comments to tell me what you're editing and why. Be specific. "Fixing 2 typos." doesn't help. "Changed "his" to "her" in third paragraph, changed "their" to "they're" in second paragraph" does. If something should be deleted, mark it for deletion and put the explanation in Comment, don't "argue" or give a "response."

5 ) Know basic grammar and punctuation. "I" is capitalized. Names are capitalized. Sentences get periods at the end (or question marks or exclamation marks). A single space goes after most punctuation except at the end of a sentence. Know the difference between "its" and "it's." ("It's" = "It is"). When speaking to someone and using their name, a comma goes before and after their name. "It's true that I love you, Fred, but I love you too, George." is correct. "Its true that i love you fred but I love you too,George" is not.

6 ) Don't duplicate. Particularly for major plot points, if the info is in the Recap, it doesn't need to be in Notes or Trivia. If a quote appears entirely in Allusions, it doesn't need to be in Quotes as well. Click on More Quotes/Trivia/Notes. You typically don't see everything on the episode's main page.

7 ) Don't anticipate. That's part of being accurate. Don't go by previews--sometimes scenes get cut or another version used when the episode goes to air. Don't assume an Allusion will be an allusion until you see the episode.

8 ) It's not personal. Don't insert stuff like "I" or "Don't you think" or "We all know..." Stick to the factual and put opinions, analysis, and speculation into your review.

9 ) Quotes. Quotes should be memorable, significant, and/or humorous. They should stand on their own and make sense to someone who hasn't seen the show, and represent quality writing. Don't use quotes just to "prove" something or indicate a key moment if the words aren't otherwise memorable, significant, or humorous. Try to focus on the key line or lines and avoid three paragraphs of "set up" quotes. Bold the speaker name, then put in an unbolded colon, then a space, then the line quote. Don't put quotation marks around each line. Hit a single Return/Enter for the next speaker's line. Contextual explanations should be used as little as possible, be as short as possible, put in parentheses, and italicized. For episodes that aren't currently premiering, a time code in the Comment section is preferred.

10 ) Notes. As per TV.com standards, Notes is for off-screen production-related stuff. Stuff the characters wouldn't know. Background music, special credit info, relevant background on the actors, in-jokes, etc. "What else they've been in" and "They're best known for" and "They've worked together before" is covered by the cast list section and its links, unless there's some kind of in-joke involved.

11 ) Trivia. As per TV.com standards, Trivia is for obscure yet on-screen stuff the viewer might not notice. This includes goofs. Plot points and other obvious stuff are often spoilers and are not Trivia--they should go in the Recap. According to TV.com guidelines, Trivia is not merely a catchall for anything that doesn't fit in the other categories. Nor is it the place for fan theories or speculation, or goofs based on same.

12 ) Allusions. As per TV.com standards, Allusions are for cultural references--other TV shows, movie, films, books. Always provide the single line of the quotation first that contains the Allusion (formatted as #9 above), then a single return, then the explanation. Internal continuity is pretty common in TV shows so unless it's obscure (Trivia), it's not an Allusion. The explanation (not cut-n-pasted) should be detailed enough that someone unfamiliar with the allusion can understand: roughly 20-50 words, one paragraph. Word definitions and translations are not Allusions (or Trivia or Notes, either). Allusions are deliberate and typically something the writers have the characters say. Allusions should be unique and reference the original source whenever possible, rather then another show that references the original source.

13 ) Summaries and Recaps. Summaries should be short and not give away any spoilers. Recaps should be a complete scene-by-scene account of the episode, without stage directions or meta-references like "In this scene...". Actor names don't go in summaries or recaps. Write it like you'd write a reference book entry. Don't include real-life info ("This season," actor listings, etc.). Save quotes for the Quote section (see #9 above).

-----

One last thing. If you submit something and it's rejected, remember: it's nothing personal. These standards are in place to promote accuracy, readability, and keep the episode pages from being too "cluttered" with extraneous info. If you get a rejection, read the Comments I provide, come here and look at these guidelines, and PM me if you have any questions. Some folks I had to reject the first time are now my most prolific contributors.

Better than last year at least...

Yep, E3. I happened to see the Nintendo Press Conference, and I definitely liked it slightly better than last year's conference. Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M. I'll probably never play them, but they looked nice and were a welcome difference from all the grandparent-friendly crap they wanted to highlight...

Those were my thoughts. BRB, gotta see Sony nao...

Week 22 (24th-30th May): The Week That Was in TV

The last week of May was a very interesting one in Aussie TV. TV network giants Seven & Nine, who are always dominant of the industry, were given a little bit of a wake up call by the other, much smaller networks, Ten, SBS & ABC. It's also become very apparent this year that local Aussie shows are winning the ratings over the US mega-hits for the first time ever.

Seven won the week in ratings again with a 27.5% share. Followed by Nine (25.7%), Ten (24.2%), ABC (17.5%) & SBS (5.2%).

Top Shows This Week:
1. Seven News Sunday - Seven
2. Masterchef Challenge - Ten
3. Nine News - Nine
4. Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation - Ten
5. Seven News - Seven
6. Spicks & Specks - ABC
7. NCIS - Ten
8. The Chasers War on Everything - ABC
9. Thank God You're Here - Seven
10. Merlin - Ten

If you compare this week with week 22 in the TV calendar 3 years ago in 2006, 6 out of the top 10 shows of the week were international, including Lost, Desperate Housewives, Greys Anatomy, CSI & House. In 2009, its rare to have more than 1 international show making the list! Anyone have an idea as to why the change over the years?

- Former AFL Footy Show host Eddie McGuire has been asked by the nine network to return, claming it would boost ever-falling ratings.

- 24 star Kiefer Sutherland insists that he does not think that he is 'the real Jack Bauer' after a head-butting incident on the Jimmy Fallon Show.

- The Steven Spielberg / Tom Hanks upcoming mini-seires The Pacific is due to air in 2010 & big international markets in countries like the UK, Germany, Canada & France have already bought the rights to air i. The Pacific is a follow up of the sucessfull mini-series Band of Brothers and will follow the stories of the allies battle's in the Pacific theatre of WWII.

- The Australian Communications & Media Authority announced that Channel Nine has topped the commerical free-to-air broadcasters in delivering locally-produced adverts in 2008. Aussie networks are required to screen locally-made ads for at least 80% of their ads that show between 6am & midnight.

- CANCELLED: My Name is Earl.

- ABC has bought an assortment of content from BBC including the third series of Robin Hood as well as Life, Yellowstone, Nature's Great Events, Human Journey, Later...with Jools Holland & Being Erica.

Inauguration Day and That's Not Me on XBox Live
It's been a while, so I thought I'd jump up on the ol' soapbox for a sec.

First of all, I just want to publicly air my support for the man who will, in less than an hour, be our new President. I'm not going into this new administration with blinders on, and I can safely say that I already question one or two of his ideas, but I do have faith that President Obama will have a positive effect on the office of the President, on the country as a whole, and on our perception in the larger world. He is inheriting a great opportunity, and a massive burden. Here's hoping that he (and we) can rise to the occasion.

And on a much more trivial note, my lovely wife just bought me an amazingly extravagant early birthday present: an XBox 360. This big lump sum purchase leaves us rather cash-poor at the moment, so no games other than the two that came with the system ("Lego Indiana Jones" and "Kung-Fu Panda"). I did, however, sign up for XBox Live, which is very cool. The only problem is that I had to sign up as "grailwolf13" because someone already had the name "grailwolf". It's very odd. That's the first time I've ever had anyone else take my usual name, and I'm not sure how to feel about it. Anyway, if you see a "grailwolf" on XBox Live, it's not me, but a "grailwolf13" uttering my usual catchphrase will be the genuine article. I won't be able to be online very often (at least, not playing), but if you see me around go ahead and introduce yourself. And if you need someone to catch bullets, fall off platforms, or get eaten by zombies, I'm your guy.

Hurdy gur,
-Marc

Movie Review: Inconvenient Truth. Among other things

Well, I've put up my review of 1080 avalanche and here is my review for An Inconvenient Truth!

I watched this one about....1 day ago so it is still fresh in my memory ( Unlike some of the games I review ). So, time for the review!

Movie Review: An Inconvenient Truth

An Inconvenient Truth is a documentary presented by Al Gore and directed by Davis Guggenheim. It is concerned with Global Warming and a bit about Al Gore`s efforts to expose the threat of Global Warming to the public. The film consists mostly of footage from Al Gore`s presentation called "The Slideshow" which he has presented in many places around the world.

In a technical sense the film seemed very good. Some good camera work and footage presents itself. Of course, as this is a documentary you will probably pay little to no attention to these aspects of the movie.

The music is very nice. It even won the "Best original song" Academy Award ( The first documentary to do so ). On this front, I really don`t have much to say. Once again, as it is a documentary this won`t matter much.

The meat of any documentary however, is what it is presenting. And in this case it is Global Warming and also some mis-conceptions surrounding it. This is a very polarizing subject, and for some people it won`t help that Al Gore is presenting it, as for some reason many people seem to be very hateful towards Al Gore. Your enjoyment of this film will be determined somewhat by your opinions on Global Warming and Al Gore. Although the movie is made very well so I would think that an open minded...skeptic would still enjoy it even with it's subject matter.

The writing is well done, although some people might be turned off by the bad jokes during the presentation pieces. But bad jokes are right at home during presentations and I don't feel that they really detract from the content of the film at all.

So, if you are a liberal, and especially if you are a member of the Green Party you will enjoy this movie very much. But if you are a skeptic you might not be so into it, but it should at least get your brain juices flowing.

Anyway, that's all I have to say!

Movie Rating ( Personal ): 5/5
Movie Rating ( Average Person ) 3.5/5

Well that's about it, I'm feeling less messed up and my dad says that I'm going to enroll in an online high school soon enough ( Japanese educational system is crap ).

12. Jungle Brothers - Back In the Jungle
13. Just Ice - I Run the Streets
14. Melle Mel & Grandmaster Caz - The Battle Is On
15. Master Ace - Revolution's 'Bout To Start

A release which has the internet buzzing: Top Shelf 8/8/88. This compilation comes with a too-good-to-be-true backing story. Indeed listeners will easily be able to tell that these tracks weren't laid down back in the day but what we're left with is a brilliant concept many Hip-Hop heads will welcome with open arms: "Golden Age" legends kickin' 88 st.yle rhymes over 88 st.yle beats. As you can see from the tracklisting this album is something to get excited about. Once Yo! MTV Rap's presenter Fab 5 Freddy finishes the introduction Dres kicks off the album with a ludicrously fast rap, kickin' cocky lines straight over your head in true Black Sheep fashion. Next up is Big Daddy Kane but I couldn't help feeling a bit under-whelmed by this track. Kane circa 88 brings to mind furious cl&ssics like "Raw" and "Set It Off" but of course his performance here isn't as agile. However he still has that "if a rapper tries to diss I'll crush the mother ******" swagger. Biz Markie's appearance could easily be "Just Rhymin' With Biz" Pt. 2. His lazy flow, random rhymes and beat boxing sound as if they might well have been recorded in 88. Lyte's delivery is also in 80's mode and she name-drops many New York golden age artists and venues which makes for some misty eyed nostalgia which is the redeeming quality of her track. "Let's Go" by Brand Nubian's Grand Puba is quite possibly my favourite track on the album. His voice is a bit higher pitched but his cheeky lines; delivery and a funky bass line make that irrelevant. "Who's that cat that rocks the hot track, wack stay back it's the leader of the pack, don't test, try to mess, you know my st.yle like Daddy I'm fresh." "See I'm nice with the mic device, turn a hot MC into a block of ice, slaughter MCs that step in my path, school them on the whole coz they don't know the half." Yeeeeeeah! Smooth B busts his Nice & Smooth-days patented, inane party rhymes more designed for rocking the jam than wowing with listeners with lyrical intricacies. But still, it's dope. Likewise is Craig G's "Catch a Lyrical Beatdown". He flows nicely and benefits from one of the best beats and track titles of the album. Craig G closes out his spot by droppin' a gem, 88 old school st.yle: "We in here like swimwear... peace." The album finishes off with a poignant story rap from Master Ace, formerly of Cold Chillin'. Definitely a brilliant closer and one of the highlights of the album.

What this album reflects is a yearning for the seemingly abandoned characteristics of Hip-Hop's "golden age". A time when Run-D.M.C.'s mainstream breakthrough of the mid-80s demonstrated Hip-Hop's commercial viability to the music industry. Not yet knowing what to make of this new, unconventional art form the labels allowed the music to flourish with little intervention. The New York Hip-Hop community was like one big happy incestuous family (in a good way). A time when friendly competition and one-up-man-ship elevated the art of rhyme to its highest level, on record beefs were never allowed to spiral out of control, producers were developing ever new and fresh sampling st.yles, collaborations were rife but biting (purposely imitating) was a sure way to get your reputation flushed down the toilet. Early gangsta/hardcore (or "reality" rap as it was originally called) emerged alongside alternative, afro-centric Hip-Hop spearheaded by the Native Tongues Posse. Energetic young MCs were making a name for themselves with goofy, unconventional lyrical acrobatics while political rappers were brimming with righteous anger over the social injustices they saw in Reagan's America. Hip-Hop could be anything and everything and it still had a direct connection to and respect for its foundation: the old school pioneers who "paved the way" for the next wave of MCs and DJs to build something lasting upon their achievements. Those were the conditions of late 80s New York that produced dozens of top-notch albums, the bulk of which were released in 1988. Arguably the best year in Hip-Hop (as demonstrated by my profile banner.) Bear in mind I wasn't even born in 1988 and I didn't become a serious Hip-Hop fan until 2 years ago. But in those 2 years I have listened and enjoyed Hip-Hop for hours each day and what I have gathered is that since Hip-Hop's "golden age" there has been a general decline in the quality of music being marketed. That is not an attempt to whine it's just a simple observation. Of course there are exceptions but every Hip-Hop fan has to accept that this is the case. Things just ain't the same. "Nowadays it sounds a little different when a man raps".

And this is what Top Shelf 8/8/88 represents. A yearning for the good ol' days when Hip-Hop was just better than the crap-fest it supposedly is now. But what some fall victim to is the "everything that came out after '97 is bull ****" syndrome. This is most common amongst new Hip-Hop fans who perhaps weren't even born never mind aware of Hip-Hop in 1988 and therefore tend to over-romanticise its golden age at the expense of current music being released. I know I did. While it is crucial to have an appreciation of the great music made at that time it is also important to support good Hip-Hop in the present, of which there is plenty to enjoy. 8/8/88 is a celebration of 1988 Hip-Hop but still, it is an imitation. We can't go back in time. Hip-Hop will never recapture that youthful, fresh energy. It has seen too much, grown too world-weary and of course will never be the same again.

If you got this far thanks for reading. Remember to check the album and leave a comment.
