Before the Robots Better Than Ezra
""
Rarely does an album play through where each song is good. This is one of those albums. Better than Ezra started with a smash pop single that became overly annoying after a few weeks but drew the attention of many fans that listened the rest of their music and they knew there was something more than just a one-hit wonder. Before the Robots shows the maturity of this band. The album has some great radio-play type singles as well as some treasures that will never hit the airwaves. Those are the main components in an album that is done right and will stay in your CD player and continue to loop in Winamp over and over again. A great album for the road. The album starts out strong with “Burned” a great opener that starts the story of the album and then continues into “Daylight” a tale and struggle to find your way out. “Lifetime” which appeared in a different cut on an earlier album is a powerful but still keeping the groups simple style of telling a story. “It’s only natural” is a fun little song that journeys into “Overcome” a slower dark song that describes struggle and frustration. “Special” catches the glimpses that keep us going. “American Dream” is an interpretation and story of what happens to lost dreams and a wakeup to face real life. “Our Last Night” is a beautiful song that reflects back to someone special. “A Southern Thang” tells a fun little story of the rebel just getting out in the world. “Juicy” is a great fun song, turn it up loud. “Hollow” is another reflection song that asks wither or not some of the paths you choose are the best by telling the story of 3 friends comparing their different stories – A great album song. “Our Finest Year” wants us to think we have chosen the right path. And then we get to “Breathless”, a perfect closing song and one of the best on the album. Dropped a half step down on the Guitar to D and the same 4 chord progression as their first single in the 1990s “Good”, this song is about a bond that cannot be broken and that bond is love.
