Editor Editorial - Interview with Jekyll

Among all the editors on TV.com, Jekyll would be a testament, to the persevearance, determination and plain ol' love for television. The editor has garnered over 70 show guides, including top names such as The Sopranos, The Office, 30 Rock, Two and a Half Men and counting...having reached Level 77, and earning even the contributionator emblem. Today, I interview the man himself, asking him about his experience as editor.

Shriprema: Hey Jekyll, its nice to have you here.
Jekyll: Its nice to be here...lets get the ball rolling
Shriprema: Alright then, lets get started.

Shriprema: Which show were you first editor for? When did this happen?
Jekyll: I think it was Knight Rider or The Sopranos. Both were among my first five. I got them both between six months and a year on site.

Shriprema: Was it difficult to get the first editorship? What thoughts ran through your head?
Jekyll: Editor for The Sopranos unexpectedly retired after I hit 80 CP; KR I corrected the 'all stars ever appear in every episode' quirk from the TV Tome changeover, so neither was terribly difficult. I was glad in both cases to get favorite shows under my belt. KR was a favorite as a kid, and The Sopranos as an adult.

Shriprema: When you first became editor, what would you say was the biggest responsibility? Did it take up much of your time?
Jekyll: The biggest responsibility upon taking any guide is typically fixing what's wrong (which is usually in part how I become editor to begin with): improperly formatted quotes, deleting stars who weren't in a season from that season's episodes, poor spelling/grammar, finding and adding production codes, sniffing out plagiarized summaries, moving things that are in the wrong section (notes to trivia and vice versa). It can take up a lot of time, but if you just calm down and do just a little each day instead of rushing, it's really not such a big deal. In general there's no pressure, especially for an older show.

Shriprema: Now, you're the editor of 71 shows...how does it feel to make such a big leap?
Jekyll: Meh--it's not such a huge deal anymore. The first few editorships it's like "OMG, I just got another show!" Now it's just business as usual and another way to contribute to a good community about a subject I love. While it's nice to get an old favorite, the best part is tackling a show I'd never even seen and getting to learn about it as I improve its guide.

Shriprema: Do you have a pet peeve about submissions?
Jekyll: Unsourced submissions and comment bypasses. And people who put 'spelling might be wrong' in their comment instead of using a dictionary.

Shriprema: You are an editor for so many genres...when looking through submitted pieces of info, do you look at any particular show first?

Jekyll: The show or genre doesn't enter into it, though I always do stuff for newly-aired epsiodes first. My queue gets moderated on trust/past performance. I first tackle submissions made by people I know have a history of making correct, useful, high-quality submissions. Then I look at everyone else's.

Shriprema: How do you cope with having to edit 71 shows, as well as 2 people? Have you ever thought about retiring?
Jekyll: People always say, "OMG, it must be so much work," and it's not. Unless a show is currently on the air, in reruns, on a site like Hulu, or just released a DVD set, I typically get no submissions for it. Honestly, the show I get the most submissions for right now has been off the air for almost 17 years: Dallas. It's on a station weekdays, and there's a very dedicated submitter. Things are busier during the regular season, but not unmanageably so.

Shriprema: Recently, you got the editorship for 30 Rock, after the editor was retired for taking a long leave, making you the editor on TV.com who is in charge of all the top comedy shows. How do you feel, for these editors who get retired? Do you wish you could pass on the editorship to them?
Jekyll: I'll be honest that I don't hold a ton of editors here in high regard. There's still way too many who:

  • are so filled with power that they accept no submissions for fear of losing the little fiefdom they've created in their mind.
  • 'collect' guides, but make no improvements unless someone else 'threatens' their position, often gaming to keep hold.
  • rubber-stamp accept every nonsense submission because they're more interested in being friends with everyone/too afraid to say "no", leading to a bloated guide that helps no one.

I honestly feel I'm one of the best and most dedicated/conscientious editors here, so while it is a shame that occasionally a personal situation might make someone leave and get retired/retire voluntarily (even the very best of editors), I won't lose any sleep over it.

Shriprema: Whats your view on having Trusted Contributors?
Jekyll: I generally do not have them, mostly for fear of them being a moron or putting things in I'd not accept from the queue than for worrying they'd try to pass my score.

Shriprema: If you had to pick just ONE show among all the shows you have, to be the editor of, which one would it be and why?
Jekyll: Probably The Sopranos, simply for being possibly the best show ever

Shriprema: Thank you Jekyll for taking the time for this interview

Episode 9: And Away they all flew like the down of a thistle (2) (Season Finale)

THE TELEGRAM KID:
Episode 9: And away they all flew like the down of a Thistle (2) (Season Finale)

Josh ran in fear towards the JCC V3.0 Headquarters. He didnt care about right and wrong anymore. He wanted to be free of the tape once and for all. He sprinted across town, his life flashing before his very eyes: the taping, the exile to the Texan desert, the murder of Timothy. Guilt and anguish overpowered him, draining every bit of strength he had left in his tired body. He did not care who the Soul Seeker was. He just wanted it over.

Drake paced the JCC headquarters nervously. He eyed Grace, eating her box of cereal, and the future stared him in the eyes. He may not be alive the next day to see her. The silence could be penetrated with a shard of glass. He could not explain to Grace, his actions.
The phone rang jarringly, shattering that moment of silence.
Drake: Whats new?
Mystery person: I dont see Josh. Have you gone back on your words?
Drake: Of course not Agent Wex. I have complete faith he'll turn up soon.
Mystery person: That video is crucial Drake. I'll have your life, if mine is in jeopardy.
Drake: Yes Wex. Do not fret.
Mystery Person: Oh, lets skip the formalities. You can call me by my real name.
Drake: Okay...Timothy.
And Drake hung up on the ring leader of the JCC V3.0.

Vivian looked through her Harvard University Pamphlet. She would have to abandon her dreams because of the person growing inside of her. She didnt think about consulting Josh. She knew how he would react, and didnt want him involved in this situation. Her father approached her.
Father: Listen Vivian, you will not tell anyone about this pregnancy. Your mom and I have a plan.
Vivian: Dont you even want to know about Josh?
Father: Not in the least bit. Stop this back-talk!
Vivian: Fine! Whats the plan?
Father: You will know in due time.
Mr Calloway walked away, taking out his wallet and looking at a woman's picture. The picture was labelled, "I will never forget you my love". He silently commented, "Look at what your son has done to my daughter".

Grace waited for her father to look away. She dashed out of the shack, seeking refuge somewhere else. She had so much to ask...so much to know...

Josh reached the footsteps of the shack. Grace looked at him across the street. He returned her glance. Without thinking, she ran across the street and into his arms. He embraced her with whatever life he had left in him. He lowered lips, ready to kiss the love of his life.
You're gonna die for even thinking of that
Drake yelled as he walked out of the bar. He pointed the revolver at Josh's head, ready to shoot him.

BANG!

A bullet was shot. Drake fell down onto the concrete floor, his heartbeat failing with every second. Timothy stood across the street, gleaming away.
"I told you that no one but me, gets to lay hands on him Drake!"
Drake dragged Josh down to the ground
Drake: Listen: Take the videotape and run away as far as possible. Take Grace with you. Do not let Timothy get hold of you. Your life will be over if he sees you again.
Josh: What the hell are you talking about???
Drake: IT WAS ME! I AM THE SOUL SEEKER! Now get...
Drake paused, as he closed his eyes slowly, getting one last glimpse of the world, before he drifted away.
Nash. Look him up.
He muttered to Josh, before passing away, removing one more gangster from Jonaruchio.

Josh looked across the street at Timothy, each of them ready to fight till the very end. Josh became more frazzled. He could kill Timothy right there right then, but he had more to find out. And for that, he needed Timothy to be alive. And he needed to save Grace.
RUN!
He yelled, and he and Grace fled from the scene. Timothy laughed maniacally.
Let them run. It will be their last movements alive.
He muttered to himself, before he started muching away on his tater tot.

The First Paragraph of
Season 2: Doors
Episode 10: Closer
Vivian continued to roll the dough. She was hell bent on making the perfect loaf of bread. She added the flour and sugar to perfect proportions. It seemed like a tiresome chore. But she was determined for some reason, to at least accomplish this in life.
The door bell rang, and was momentarily muted by the noise of the oven. Vivian opened the door and invited the man inside.
Im cooking something. Just wait in the living room.
The man did as he was told. Vivian then proceeded back into the kitchen.
Vivian: So will I be able to put my baby up for adoption?
Man: Definitely. We just need to enquire some facts. Whats the status of the mother?
Vivian: You're talking to her, you weirdo.
Man: And the father?
Vivian took a deep breath. She saw the funeral invitation Grace had sent her. She had so little, yet so fond memories of Josh. Tears started rolling down her cheek. And just as soon as grief overpowered her, the bread burnt.

TheTelegramKid - Episode 8: Sprang to his Sleigh To his Team gave a Whistle (1)

THE TELEGRAM KID
EPISODE 8: SPRANG TO HIS SLEIGH, TO HIS TEAM GAVE A WHISTLE (PART ONE)

For weeks you've been wondering which scenario happened. Im not going to drag it any further. It was Scenario 1.

That's right people. When the hitman cornered the 2 boys, Timothy was brave enough to confront the hitman. He got injured repeatedly but killed the hitman in the end (ref. Episode 6: Options). However, all his efforts had gone into vain, as in the previous episode (ref. Episode 7: Excuse me for my Humanity), Josh killed Timothy for an unknown reason.

Tonight, the fanfic series returns!

Josh soaked in the air, as it became cooler and cooler, as the car made its way out of the Texan desert. He had been driving for 2 days now, trailing the bus, hoping it would lead him to Jonaruchio. The camera lay near the gears, intact and carefully placed. The blood from Timothy's corpse seeped its way across the car and made its way towards the camera. Josh brazenly ceased the blood flowing, and didn't even wince. For the past 48 hours, he had tried not to think about the fact that he had murdered Timothy. He hummed the tune to every Dolly Parton song, and kept observing the scenery. Deep inside, he knew that if he looked at Timothy's body, his heart wouldn't be able to take it.

A green wreath lay on the open road as the car made its way. Not even a flicker of excitement filled Josh's body. Every year, he would devotedly await Christmas, that time of the year when his life wouldn't seem that pathetic. His parents would be moderately pleasant with him, the pretty girls would look in his direction and say a word or two, and the smell of burnt cookies drifted across the entire town. It was the one time of the year that Jonaruchio didn't look as gloomy as it was. But Josh had bigger problems on his mind now. The video had to get into the right hands. He couldn't give 2 hoots about his personal life. And suddenly, Vivian Calloway's image drifted into his head. He didn't want to even think about Vivian for now.

As Josh almost fell into a trance, he sat up more straight. The bus was now near a towering bulding. This was it. He was FINALLY out of Texas! Of course, the sign "You're leaving Texas" would have been a better clue, but we can't all be winners. Josh continued driving, as hope was once again restored.

Drake looked at Grace. She looked more tired than usual, with several cuts on her legs. Drake: Don't worry sweetheart. Josh should be arriving in Jonaruchio any day now. I haven't heard from the "hitman", so Im assuming Josh did something to him.
Grace: ...Kay...
Drake: This is all gonna be over Grace,,,the things I do I... I can't expect you to understand. And that's natural. But Im doing it for the greater good.
Grace: What possible good can come from leading a town, with fear?
Drake: You have absolutely no idea do you? I guess ignorance is bliss... one of these days, you'll find out Grace.
Grace: Yeah whatever...
Drake: Look I...Erm Grace, how the heck did those scratch marks appear on your legs?
Grace: Ask the termites in my room, here in this shed Dad
Drake: Grace, this shed may look bad, but its completely suitable for living. I just had pest control here a week ago. Now you better tell me the truth Grace...after all, you've been looking more tired than usual as well....
Grace: Dad, if you don't want to trust me, there's nothing I can do...so just leave me alone while you randomly kill the next people who walk down the street

Drake's heart felt quite hurt. Though he had power, he STILL was a persona non grata.

Josh struggled to keep his eyes open. The only thing preventing him from sleeping were the mental images of him shooting Timothy, replaying over and over in his head. He had half a mind to pull over and dump Timothy's body in the drain, but that would waste valuable time, a commodity he didn't have. He kept following the bus. He was near territory that somewhat registered in his head. Jonaruchio would be a few hours away, he thought to himself.

Vivian Calloway was in her bungalow. She was retaking the pregnancy test over and over again. She didn't get the result she was yearning for. She was knocked up, indeed. Pride was an essential in the Calloway family, and whoever sacrifices his or her dignity, were said to be disowned. The child would have maternal pedigree but on the paternal side, it WOULD be frowned upon.

He had done it. Days and days of immense torture and fatigue had led him to this place. Josh was FINALLY in Jonaruchio. Of course the atmosphere was tense and unwelcoming, but it signaled hope for his tiring journey.

Josh got out of his car. He looked around the town and saw how much it had changed. Christmas decorations were hung on the 99-cent store, Santa Clauses paraded the sidewalks.

The car was low on petrol, and Josh had to think fast about his course of action. He accelerated it and headed straight for the Wally Woodstein Dumpster, named after Josh's father. He finally plucked the courage to look at Timothy's body. He was going to miss Timothy dearly. But he still held back his tears, as he lifted Timothy's corpse qnd tossed it into the dumpster. He then got back into his car. He had to forget about Timothy now.

Josh drove down the streets of Jonaruchio, looking for the police station. He had somewhat missed the sites of Jonaruchio. Sure, he was hated around here but he didn't give two hoots. Or at least he pretended not to.

As the car when around a bend, Josh saw her. Vivian, walking down the streets. He wanted to talk to her, but knew that she would turn away from him immediately. He just kept on driving. Suddenly, a baseball bat smashed its way through Josh's windscreen.

Josh stopped the car abruptly. He turned around to see Drake's gang, the JCC V3.0 heading towards him, armed with many kinds of weapons. Josh regained his composure and sped off immediately, as the oil tank was depleting. The JCC V3.0 was hot on his heels, and the oil tank didn't seem like it would last long. Josh was a few metres ahead of them. He instantaneously got out of his car with the camera, and opened up his petrol compartment. As Drake closed in on Josh, Josh lit a match stick hurriedly, and threw it into the compartment before running away.

The car exploded and caused the gang to immediately fall down. Josh took this opportunity to run away with the camera.

Josh made it a few blocks down, before he fell down with exhaustion. A piece of paper blew into his face. Josh, curiously started to read it:

Dear Josh,
I see that you are alive and well. I have to say I contributed a great part to that. I have saved your life repeatedly, in order to help you get the tape to the right authorities. You think no one in this world cares about you...but I do...or at least I DID.

I've gotten information about Drake's plans. You had a wild spring break with Vivian Calloway I recall? Ah yes, the union of a rich socialite and you. Worlds will collide. I've seen you too act weird around each other...it's obvious it isn't just this sexual tension...there's something going on there.

Vivian is pregnant now. And I think we all know who the father is. Your crush Grace Sommers is in captive with Drake. And your family is being monitored every step of the way Josh. All these 3 parties are being monitored by Drake's gang, and if you do not submit the tape within 6 hours, I think your life comes to and end now.

You have even more options to make. You need to decide whether you're carrying on with this journey or not. I was helping you along the way. But I stop now.

I saw it Josh. I saw what you did to Timothy, and how you ruthlessly disposed off his body into the dumpster. Did you think no one was watching? You clearly have lost your soul. You can perish in hell for all I care. Our journey ends here. You're in charge of your life now. Good luck staying alive. And Merry Christmas.

With regards,
Soul Seeker
- end letter -

Josh looked around. There was no one in sight. For some reason, he felt like everyone was crowding him. His life had officially become wayward.

(EDITORS NOTE: In order to maintain suspense, the next episode will be delayed)
