07- slightlybetter than 06

07 was somewhat better for hip hop than 06. The biggest decline continues to be in album sales. Kanye, Jay, & T.I. were good enough to hit multiplatinum status in 07. Albums by The Game, Snoop, GFK & others pulled in solid numbers. 50's album was complete trash, being repetitive. Who knows what's in the cards for hip hop in 08!

Some old beefs were deaded in 07. T.I. &Luda killed their beef by appearing together on stage. 50 & Lil' Kim have a new song out. BG"supposedly" got back with the worst fraud in hip hop, Birdman.

back 2 back cool concerts

Last Thursday & Friday I got took in 2 concerts that were awesome.

On Thursday(03/22/07), Victoria's own Nelly Furtado played in Vancouver.  She rocked the building.  One of the reasons I went was because my niece(only 10 yrs young) had an extra ticket(quite surprised she aint ask her friends or parents, unless of course it was that Xbox 360 I was planning on getting her).

On Friday(03/23/07), Eric Clapton absolutely put on a killer performance.  The main drawback here is that he played songs from his days with The YardBirds, Cream, & Derrick & The Dominos.  Not much was played from his solo catalog.  He did do an acoustic version of "Layla", but that was one of the few times he did an scoustic session.  If you ever get a chance to watch this awesome guitarist live, go because you won't be disappointed.

writing 4 another person

I know this girl who owes me big time because I helped her on an exam.  We studied together. Somehow during that exam she actually let me write answers on her paper.  I could not believe that I was writing 2 tests at the same time.  Wonder wheher this situation is classified as cheating cuz it's definitely a first 4 me.  I don't want to say that's she dumb, but man that was weird. All this was done while the teacher wasn't paying any attention.

Recently she called to tell me about her baby mama drama in her life.  She had a child with her ex-boyfriend.  She's moved on and found a new man(not me, thank god).  The jist of this story is that her ex wants back in her life, but she's already moved forward.  I told her that she made the right choice.  However, knowing that I helped her on an exam, I was probably presenting a false front to her.

nashty 3x MVP?

Is it possible that Steve "Nashty"(phoenix suns) could be a 3x NBA mvp?  It's amazing when you consider that he's 30 & in each of the last 3 seasons, Steve has gotten better.  Once a player hits age 30, normally the skills start to fade away, but in Nash's that ain't the case.

Steve's buddy, Dirk Nowitzki(dallas mavericks) is also in the running.  He's led Dallas to the best record in the league & has been on a tear since the team opened the season 0-4. I'm not completely sold on Dallas winning the 'chip.

LeBron is another player that's in the running.  He fills up the stat sheet better than anyone else(20+ points, 7-8 boards, 5-6 assists, 2-3 steals, 1-2 blocks). Not many players can do what he does.  The main knock on LBJ is his defense.  Other than that he's the only reason the Cavs are above .500.  If the Cavs got out and traded for a Ray Allen-type(this is all hypothetical, I'm not starting a rumor) to help ease the scoring load from LeBron, then the Cavs will do much better.

Others in the MVP race are Agent Zero-Gilbert Arenas(Washington Wizards), man this guy is awesome in the clutch( 3-4 game-winning 3-pt. bombs!). Carmelo Anthony(Nuggets), yes he got suspended for 15 games & Denver went 7-8 without 'Melo, but how can you not included the NBA's leading scorer on that list, especially when his running mate is AI?  My darkhorse here is CB4(Raptors) because the guy is mad under-rated & he has all the tools to become one of the league's most dominant 3 or 4 player.

Guns N' Roses Rock/Pop
"Legend"
The legend of how these guys broke into the mainstream is legendary material. No one can do what these guys did. According to the legend, a record executive at Geffen saw these guys rocking at a club along LA's infamous Sunset Strip. This executive was eager to sign the band. He started spreading false rumors about the band(ie - this band is horrible, etc...) so that he could have GNR signed to Geffen. Supposedly Axl & this exec came to an agreement. However, things were just heating up.
A female from another record label saw the group perform & immediately put forth a contract for Axl & crew. Axl "accepted" this deal under one condition - that the female walk naked along the sunset strip. After refusing, the rest was history.
Axl returned to the record exec to sign the deal. Axl made it a point to be paid $75,000 dollars upfront which was no problem for the exec. They would go on to spend that money on drugs & alcohol.
In 1987/88, GNR released the classic Appetite For Destruction album. It spawned the hits Paradise City, Welcome To The Jungle, & the ever popular Sweet Child of Mine and made GNR a household name.
With Axl(many compared him to Alice Cooper, or even Freddie Mercury) manning the point, nothing or nobody could stop GNR except themselves.
In the 1990s, Axl started to become a recluse by either showing up late or not showing up at all to the gigs. It appeared the crew had enough of Axl's tyranny. Slash & Duff quickly jumped & the others would follow.
Slash, Duff, & Sorum were looking for someone to front their new band. Ex-STP lead singer, Scott Weiland, was the perfect fit. Together they formed Velvet Revolver. Their debut album, Contraband(2004), is a banging album.
In 2002, GNR's new line-up appeared on the MTV awards as the show was closing. One of the "new" guys was wearing a KFC bucket over his head. They performed 3 hits. The vibe was there, but it didn't feel right to devoted fans.
Axl was/is one of rock's greatest performers, whenever he puts his mind to it.

Album Review

Da Game Is to Be Sold Not to Be Told Snoop Dogg
"Decent"
After jumping off Death Row Snoop became a prized free agent. Despite his checkered past, Snoop was able to change his image to be more "friendly". Ultimately, Master P landed one of hip hop's greatest talents of all time on No Limit. It was a 3 year deal were Snoop would have to release 3 albums in those 3 years. This deal would also help No Limit become a legit record label on a national & worldwide level.
On "Snoop World", Master P says that Snoop "brings to the tank money, power, & respect." Actually, Snoop brought his west coast sound to the south. Also, Snoop was someone that the rest of his labelmates could look to for help.
The majority of tracks are produced by Beats by the Pound. Sorry to say, but Beats by the Pound are weak leading to many lackluster tracks such as "Don't Let Go" "20 Dollars To My Name", & others.
Also, most of the songs features the No Limit army.
"Gin & Juice II" is NOT the same as the original "Gin & Juice". The beat is there, but the original rules.
"DP Gangsta", with C-Murder, is a remake of NWA's "Gangsta Gangsta" were Snoop is Ice Cube & C plays Eazy-E.
Overall, it's a decent album, nothing spectacular. No one song jumps out unlike Doggystyle were certain tunes just hits the fan.

Encore Eminem
"Disappointing"
It has been a few years since Eminem dropped a bangin album. After releasing The Eminem Show is 2002, Em hit the big-screen with 8Mile(a semi-autobiography peek into his upbringing) & also produced albums for his buddies Obie Trice, D12, & 50 Cent. In 2004, Em came back to the game with Encore. The lead single, "Just Lose It", caused a brouhaha with the King of Pop. Once again controversy found Eminem, or better, the sillier-than-ever Slim Shady. The King of Pop went on the offensive crying foul play in print & the airwaves. Even the former owners of the Source Benzino & Daivd Mays called for Em to scrap the song & issue a public apology to the K.O.P. The song, however, falls into the category of pop-rap friendliness along with previous tracks(ie- The Real Slim Shady, My Name Is, & Without Me).
His audience explores the dichotomy of Em on this album, an exeplary effort despite the fact that the serious-minded Marshall Mathers side & the slaphappy Slim Shady seem to be growing further apart. On one hand, the cinematic narratives such as "Yellow Brick Road" & "Like Toy Soldiers" address last year's sontroversies involving beefs & race with insight & masterful storytelling skills. However, bugged-out numbers such as "Big Weenie", Rain Man", & "A** Like That" have him avoiding serious content, experimenting with off-the-wall flows & random word association.
The best track byfar is "Mosh", an anti-Bush bashing designed to aid the young voters & inspire the complacent hip hop nation.
"Mockingbird" is an ode to his daughter.
Minus the miscues, this is an average album at best.

King T.I.
"Turn it up!"
He's been saying for years, runnin his mouth & no one believed him until now. The self-proclaimed King of the South.
2006 was one of the worst years for rap sales in history, but somehow T.I.'s King managed to breakthrough & reached platinum status. Sure Lil Wayne's Tha Carter II reached platinum too, but it was released in December 2005. This was T.I.'s moment of glory. To further strengthen his strangle hold on hip hop during 2006, he released ATL, his film debut.
The lead single, What You Know, has him slangin: "Ya label got got(ay!)/'Cause you are not hot(ay!) I got the top spot/(ay!) And it will not stop.", over DJ Toomp's synthesized beat.
Live in the Sky, featuring Jaime Foxx, is an awesome crafted song. He gets real when he says (Got 4 kids, the smiles on their faces/Mean more to me than my crown and my bracelet/Take that away from me and my life is buck naked).
Other sure fire cuts include I'm Talkin To You, Ride Wit Me, & I'm Straight".
Hello & Why You Wanna are songs for the chicks.
Stand Up Guy is clearly a musical experiment gone wrong with its spacey video game effect.
2006 was a blackeye for hip hop in terms of album sales(d/l & burning cd's played a major role), but King managed to do something right in a year when everything went sour.

The Big Bang Busta Rhymes
"Decent"
What people forget is that Busta originally had Dr. Dre produce a few tracks on the album Genesis(2001). Back then Busta was either on Elektra records or J records & neither label was known to be a powerhouse. After disappointing sales for It Ain't Safe No More Busta's career seemed shaky at best. In 2004, Dr. Dre signed Busta to Aftermath. This signing was cause for confusion rather than excitement as critics wondered whether Busta could bounce back. However, Busta would have the last laugh. The odd pair released The Big Bang & the signing made perfect sense.
Definitely having Dr. Dre's stamp on this album assured Busta of a sure fire album. With many different production styles this album flows nicely.
He continues to put New York back on the hip hop map with fellow homies such as new labelmate Raekwon on Goldmine, Q-Tip on You Can't Hold the Torch, & Nas on Don't Get Carried Away. New York S*** is definitely an anthem for the Big Apple.
Touch It is a club banger. The remix includes Lloyd Banks, Missy Elliott, Papoose, DMX, Mary J. Blige, & others.
I Love My B**** & They're out To Get Me are 2 tracks that are difficult to swallow.
Overall, this an excellent comeback album from hip hop's energizer bunny.
