When Dark Side of the Moon was first released in 1973, it was one of the first and best albums to use the kind of psychedelic elements and studio effects that were unheard of for its time. The album compacts nine near-perfect tracks that complement each other perfectly. From the beginning of Speak to Me, to the end of Eclipse, the listener takes a journey and experiences a multitude of emotions.

The lyrics of every song have been crafted well, speaking of war, time, money, mental illness, death and all of life’s other "pleasures". This, along with elements such as the flow of the music from track to track and the haunting vocals of Great Gig in the Sky, made Dark Side a great seller worldwide. By 2004, it had sold over 40 million albums, and it was estimated that one in every fourteen people under the age of fifty in the United States own a copy of Dark Side of the Moon.
