One of the best country rock bands to come out of L.A. since the Flying Burrito Brothers, I See Hawks In L.A. have a new album coming out in March called A New Kind Of Lonely. Our Free MP3 of the Day, “Spirit of Death,” is one of the prettiest country rock songs you’ll hear this year.

“Sweet sister Amy left us in the fall/Her spirit lingers in the hearts of us all,” sings Hawks founding member Rob Waller on “Spirit of Death.”

“I asked my old friend if Amy was O.K.,” he continues, “He said that blazing fiddle carried her on her way.” It was the “Spirit of Death,” Waller repeats, his gentle vocals supported by Hawks co-founder and fellow songwriter Paul Lacques.

There’s nothing sad about “Spirit of Death,” though: “If you visit my grave, you won’t be alone,” Waller and Lacques sing at the bridge. “I’ll be dancing on my own gravestone. Bring your pretty woman, bring your fruit of the vine. Whole lotta laughing and a little bit of crying.”

The band that Dave Alvin called “one of California’s unique treasures,” I See Hawks in L.A. will release A New Kind of Lonely on March 6th via I See Hawks In L.A. (with a pre-release party at McCabe’s in Santa Monica, CA on February 24th).

[While you’re waiting for their new release, we highly recommend purchasing their 2008 release, Hallowed Ground, from iTunes.]
