Best way to get a grip on CMJ: plan ahead. Pick out a handful of showcases you want to catch, stick around for a few bands, then move on to the next showcase. Routing your day around individual acts instead of showcases will lead to burdensome travel time and unforgiving headaches, so eschew our advice at your own risk! Besides, CMJ offers a week of music discovery - leave pretensions and snobbery at the door, and enjoy new bands before evil labels snatch them up and create more Black Eyed Peas. Check out our most anticipated CMJ showcases and grab free music from participating bands after the jump... KEXP has put together a pretty unstoppable lineup for their daytime shows at the Ace Hotel.  If you don't have to work this could be a great opportunity to see these artists up close and personal.  Many of them will be playing other shows but at the KEXP concerts you won't have to battle hordes of people in a tiny bar to see them.
Best of all, the performances are free, but it's first come first serve so show up early!
